How to pay for your new motorhome ?one recommendation we have received is to use a SWIFT credit transfer for the amount you expect to pay.
Arrange it with the manager of your bank. When the deal has been struck phone the manager and ask to action the transfer. Any small shortfall for accessories etc can be made up by withdrawing cash from ATMs.
German dealers will not accept cheques or credit/debit cards. The debit card system is unknown to them and they pay substantial charges on credit card transactions. [ Back to Top ]

How do I organise Insurance ?You will have to go to the local vehicle registration office, to get the temporary export plates and Third party only short-term insurance which covers you till you get home in UK. You cannot get cover from UK insurance companies for the journey between the vendor and your port of entry. Once in the UK some insurers will insure you based on the chassis number so phone around to ensure your insurer will cover you for the UK leg of the return journey [ Back to Top ]

How do i register my Motorhome when i get back to UK ?Ignore the best part of the DVLA's booklet for a start. Well, the bit which lists the documentation required. A Vat receipt is not needed (This has been substantiated by a member who has actually gone through the process)
You need two important documents from the vendor. One is a Zulassungschein, which is the equivalent of our V5 and gives all the data on the vehicle, including type approval. The other document is a small booklet which gives the registration details and proof of ownership. Armed with these and with the red and white temporary export plates on the 'van you should't have any problems with Customs on entry to UK.
Just fill in the relevant forms (Depends on whether you are importing new or second hand.) and take it, together with all of your invoices, delivery notes, export registration, etc., to the local DVLA office. Registration should only take a couple of days unless you get selected for a random inspection
In the case of a new or dutyable vehicle, the DVLA will send the papers through to HM Customs & Excise at Dover. A Vat bill will be sent through to you (With a 30 days pay by date.) about a week later. Worked out on the commercial exchange rate - not the tourist rate. Suspect that they only charge Vat on the vehicle, not on the accessories or extras such as the Zoll.

Do i pay VAT on a used vehicle ?NO, you won't pay VAT in country of purchase or when you bring it back into UK, the criteria to be considered used is that the motorhome must have covered over 6000 miles and and be over 6 months old. [ Back to Top ]

Will i need to make any modifications one i'm back in the UK ?The obvious answer here is yes, firstly the speedometer will need to be adapted to read in the Uk standard MPH (Transfers can be obtained which overlay the front of the speedo with MPH gradients on them)
Headlights should be adjusted to dip to the LEFT
you may have to change your fog light arrangement also, there should be either one fog light on the offside or one on each side. [ Back to Top ]

Is it cheaper to buy abroad than within UK ?This is a long debated question, but the inferrence is that yes it is. The costs involved are extensive when self purchasing abroad however with all the following having to be taken into consideration:-
Telephone costs (can be considerable bearing in mind phoning around insurers, dealers abroad, ferry companies etc etc)
Ferry / Air / Rail costs - You have to get there and back and most people with either fly there and drive the motorhome back or ferry there and back.
Fuel costs - again this can be a sizeable amount depending upon the mileage covered.
