OK. I've just again proved I'm a geek Sad

I've spent several hours today researching the camera market for a high quality "compact" camera, smaller than a dSLR. The last camera I bought was my ageing but still great Ixus. I don't keep up with fast-moving consumer electronics for the sake of it, life's too short, but I do a deep dive before significant purchases. I was aware of a burgeoning format called micro four thirds, but that's about it.

Alison needs another camera before a major trip later this year, so summer is about the last time to buy to allow her to become familiar with it.

So, predictably, going by my track record, I have concluded it doesn't make sense to buy anything on the market today. I'm going to wait until Canon's competitor to the micro4/3, interchangeable lens market is announced, and hope something other than the first high-end one is on the market in time. It sounds just the job:

I'll be intrigued with what Nikon is planning to release in April, but by then won't buy until I see the later Canon.

You remind me of Dad, don't buy it because in 6 months its out of date etc.!
Its rubbed off on me. Anyway a Canon G9, 10 11, will do it all and they're built like tanks. My G9 is brill, heavy, and has all manual controls if you want. I got mine from e bay. The latest G11 is expensive.

Yes, I handled a G12 earlier today. Can buy for around £380. In many ways I like it, but its positioning in the market is getting really squeezed now, and it would be a purchase when it has become too long in the tooth.

Hi Dave,
I understand that, but unless you're a professional glamour (I wish), advertising or high end photographer then these cameras do what you want. Some pros use these when they can't be bothered to carry a bag of stuff around. Personally I like to have manual control, good quality and build quality, BUT I don't want a bag around my neck that says "High Quality SLR, and all the weight, the canon goes in my pocket!

Alternatively wait 15 years for the micro Canon s , d sx/55 Laughing Laughing

Ditto! Smile

Been there, done that with SLRs in the A-1 era. Spent too much time on holiday lugging it around and looking at the world through viewfinders. But I got it out of my system and now much prefer having something decent handy when I might need it. The combination of my Ixus and this next camera should do it for several more years.

If I didn't want optical zoom I would be sorely tempted by this, now available for pre-order in the UK:

I haven't handled this, but will do while I'm waiting for Canon and Nikon:

Looks like the Canon EIS will have a viewfinder? This was the main thing that put me off the Sony NEX5.

So would I - it's gorgeous!

But why a fixed focus, semi wide angle, fixed lens?

Not that I would want interchangeable lenses - it defeats the object of a pocket camera. 10x (or more) optical zoom is essential to tick our boxes.

Dave,

Their "explanation" is on that site:
http://www.finepix-x100.com/story

Personally I suspect the reasons are marketing/price and walking before they can run. The dual viewfinder causes problems with different lenses, but there will be huge pressures for a mount design on a successor.
