Be like trying to shove a dry stick up a dogs **** !! (and thats when its empty!!)

Normally aspirated "old design" diesels are gutless !! I had a Pilote on a 2 litre non turbo Renault Trafic base and any steep hill required first yes FIRST gear !! So be sure to try your intended purchase before you part with any money to be sure you can live with the total and utter lack of "grunt" (technical term for power/torque and yes I do know the difference!)

As said by Mr Plod. We had a 2.4 normally aspirated VW in 99.
Steam past the trucks on the flat autoroute, arrive at an incline and steadily the trucks steam past you.

An underpowered Motorhome is an embarrassment for the owner and an inconvenience for other road users.
Just like Tractors and Caravans in Devon Smile

Yeah, i would avoid a non-turbo myself. The 308D was a solid workhorse in its day, and typicall Germanic in its build, but nowadays they feel their age i'm afraid Sad

All true but a testimony to the tutonic engineering nonetheless. Still plodding on.

I personally love the old Mercedes. A 308d from 1990 should be 5 speed. The models built between 1989 - 1995 have slightly more powerful engines than the earlier 207d/307d (built from 77-89).

We don't find the 2.4 diesel engine in our 1990 Merc noisy.
They aren't speed merchants but we've driven old Mercs over the alps and the pyranees and its been fine. We've just had a bit more time to enjoy the views. I wouldn't say they were embarassingly slow and loading it made no difference to its speed.

They are very solid and reliable and very German. Our current Merc only has 80k on the clock but our last one had nearly 400,000 and it was still running perfectly. We get around 35mpg out of ours and it has always fast passed its MOT emissions test.
