Please help. We're looking for a portable generator to give us extra power when staying without hook up. Is there a generator that's quieter than the others? and is there anything I need to look out for when buying one?
Thank you for your help, any advice will be greatly appreciated
Richard
Honda 2.0i is probably the best for build quality and reliability but not the most powerful and very expensive.
I have a Kipor 2.6i and its great, always starts first or second pull, its quiet, powerful, and cost about a third of the Honda.
By far the quietest Generator is the Honda10i, and the most reliable.
I purchased my one in 2002 for the MH, only used it a couple of times, once on a Aire in France when the Gas side of our Fridge broke. So I ran the Generator for 30 mins facing away from other MHs. When I turned it off, the occupants of a MH 30ft away started clapping !!! ( they were British)
That was the end of the Generator, I didn't like it anyway, and now use it in my mobile Medical Workshop. Works fantastic and the noise is not a problem.
We now have a 100w Solar panel (in the UK not to clever) and the best buy was the Efoy 1600 almost totally silent, certainly no one outside knows when it's running.
Like Tony645 I have a Kipor 2.6 which was a far cheaper option than Honda. I use it on the odd occasion I do not hook up but one of the main reasons I bought it was to allow me to charge up batteries over the winter period as I have no power in the compound.
It has a "smart" throttle which lowers the noise slightly as it only generates to meet the demand however, on full its quite noisy.
As others have said, the Honda is probably the best in class but also expensive.
We have had one for several years and only used it a few times, mainly when we had our caravan.
When we have run it we have made sure that other people haven't been inconvenienced by noise or fumes. Use a long lead so that you can move it well away from neighbours and bear in mind that, although a Honda is fairly quiet, a constant rumble can get very annoying to others.
Just deploy common sense and good manners.
Landyman.
