recently bought a new camera (Fulifilm H10) which allows me to use RAW technology.
RAW processing comes with the bundled software.
I have read the software's overview and it looks quite interesting.
It seems that it is possible to process pictures on a PC similar to what you could do by using camera settings. In other words you can almost retake the photo.
OK......is the PC RAW processing within the capabilities of some one who can easily destroy a photo using Photoshop type software.
Can photos in RAW be displayed and printed straight from the camera or memory card without any intervening manipulation before the images can be used.

Hi,
I am guessing that your camera will take 2 images at the same time, in other words you will have the RAW and a jpeg so that one you could print.
I am no expert on RAW and have not made time to master them however they say the main bonus apart from the amount of different things you can do is that you can always undo something even though it can be saved in between.
You can only view RAW on your PC with the correct software I use Photoshop.

You could print straight away but it would be quite drab picture as raw photos have no visual correction, but go with the raw as it's so flexible once you get the hang of it.

By using RAW you have a much larger file which has more data than a JPEG. If you have RAW software bundled with your camera it should allow you to adjust the picture - exposure, shadow depth, colour temperature, etc. to get a good picture. It will probably be quite simple to use with a series of slider controls.
When you save the adjusted picture it creates a new picture file so the original RAW picture is left untouched. So you can think of the RAW file as an original negative that you keep. You can open the RAW image over and over and play about with different settings with affecting the original file.
The experts at our Scuba diving club tell us to use Raw and then edit afterwards.
Raw will record every bit of information the camera saw at full colour depth and detail.
The downside is it takes a lot more space but with modern memory cards that's not a problem.
So if your camera will store a Raw and jpg for each picture then great. Just throw away the raws for any happy snaps that you are not going to spend hours polishing up!
I'm going to have a crack at this especially when I want to save a special shot.

You'll find that you can do most of your editing in the RAW plug in and often don't need to go to Photoshop. You can do things like alter the white balance and exposure as well as crop, sharpen, and adjust brightness and contrast amongst others. IMO it's easier toget a handle on than Photoshop proper.
My advice to you would be to shoot "Raw" and a small Jpeg at the same time if your camera will let you. It will enable you to view your small jpegs quicker, deleting those you don't want. another advantage being you can send a small jpeg by email should you want too. Try sending a large RAW file and your ISP might get upset and reject it.
The thing to remember with RAW files is they need to be processed to turn them into a true usable image, the jpeg has already been processed by the camera.
