Evening all
I've had my 1999 Autostratus on a 2.5 litre turbo diesel Peugeot Boxer chassis for about six months and I've noticed a problem getting worse with fourth and fifth gear. It seems to be worse once the engine has warmed up too. When I change up to fourth or fifth gear or back down again it clunks and doesn't go in cleanly. Today while driving back to Anglesey from Shropshire (130 miles or so ) it jumped out of fifth gear 9 times.
Is this likely to be a linkage problem or perhaps a gearbox problem? The engine has only done 28,000 miles.

Hi

it sounds like the 5th gear problem. I've had it with mine (same engine)

it didn't affect 4th on mine? Have a read through that thread and check out the others about it. Not as nasty as it could be!

I forgot to say that jumping out of 5th was the first sypmtom with mine - I could hold it in 5th gear for a while, but it kept jumoing out. Sad

Check the play on the clutch cable. I presume yours has one as our 2001 Pug did. I adjusted it by about 22mm and suddenly I could change gear and it would stay in gear too.

Theres 2 things you can try to fix which wont take long.

Get under the van and locate the bottom of the gearstick. Theres a through bolt that secures the gearstick to the gear linkage. Tighten this nut and bolt up. I think you will need a 13mm af spanner and perhaps an allen key.

Locate the gear linkage on the top of the gearbox (take out spare wheel if an under bonnet spare). The linkage is secured to the top of the box with a similar through bolt - so tighten this as well.

if the gear change is improved and Ok then its sorted. You can make this more permanent but buying the midified gear change linksage set and gearbox bearing from Delfin designs down south NR Dorset. We will come and fit it all for you on a camp site as it only takes 1/2hr. I did this with my old fiat and it was adifferent vehicle after that. Cost about £250 when i had it done.

Phill

Is this the same if the gearstick is the small one that is in the dash board?
