i bought 5 20watt panels and i join them as one when we are on site but when we are driving i seperate them and i made some brackets to fasten them to the windows which i also do if we are going out walking so they are still making power.

For solar panels, I would prefer roof mounted ones for a couple of reasons.
1. Light fingered people who like the look of your panel and remove it for their own use.
2. The odd gust of wind that blows the panel over. If you are lucky, no charge while it lies on the ground, if unlucky, a smashed panel !.

when i use as one 100 watt panel i fasten them with wire rope and lock them up plus i also fasten with bunjee's to the motorhome this way you can move them to face the sun all day gaining maximum power and efficiency

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

My fault for not explaining properly - we run the fridge off gas, but with no 12v I assume it's the piezo lighter that doesn't work? Certainly it was fine again when we got the 12v back. Or maybe it was only the wee light that wasn't working - the one that tells you it's on gas/240v/12v? I think our van won't support 12v to the fridge for more than 15mins after ignition off.

I think Erneboy's right - it looks as if I'd need roof-mounted if I'm to continue doing what I was doing, and I'd be better getting that fitted at home.

I think what I need to do, in the short-term anyway, is change my behaviour and be much more careful about charging up the netbook when not on EHU or in transit.

Thanks again all!
