Hi

A useful link Ray for those researching the market etc.

I am using Halifax Clarity at present and so far have been converted at 1.13. On the same days, Caxton was offering 1.1

I took a Halifax Clarity Card in Spain this winter for the first time.
I used it for as many purchases/payments as possible and also withdrew cash on it when needed. I set up monthly direct debit to minimise interest on cash withdrawals.
As all card transactions are free and a wholesale currency conversion rate is used with no exchange fees, I got much better value for my £ sterling than taking currency with me bought at tourist rates. In my opinion even cash withdrawals were good value despite interest being charged at a low rate.
Providing Halifax maintain their present terms, I shall be using the Clarity Card on my next European trip.

I've also started using a credit card (Santander Zero).

Instead of moving money from your current account, probably minimal interest, to your CC account AFTER you've used it, why not keep your credit card in credit and have no charges or interest at all? Works for me with the Zero card.

We have a Post Office card which we keep just for overseas payments and trips. Great for booking campsites / paying deposits from the UK, paying campsite fees whilst away, diesel, tolls, shopping - in fact anything - when on hols (we usually do France). Just repay in full on return (no extra comm) and keep track of your holiday spending too!

Never had a problem - except for 1st year, when had a mental block over the PIN no. whilst away and had to revert to a more costly card option. Moral there is to change the Pin no. to something esily memorable before leaving home!

The Halifax card forbids this in their terms and conditions.

My belief is that if everyone forces the cards into a credit balance, then at some point the benefit will be withdrawn.

I use online banking and withdraw cash on the credit card "NOW", and then log on and do a transfer to cover.

Russell - and that's why I use Santander. It works for me.

Travel insurance only up to 65.

Now my Jersey Nat West has decided to ditch me, I am looking for another account that gives travel insurance for the over 70s.

That would be a bit short-sighted surely. Thousands (millions?) of people giving a Bank free use of their money (over what could be several months at a time) which they could then lend out at 5% or so?

Like Tony I use Santander Zero (in conjunction with Caxton)
