There has been quite a bit of interest and discussion on here about internet access abroad and the Vodafone Data Traveller service has been mentioned a few time by myself and other as a possible cheap way of connecting to the internet abroad.
Basically (we thought) it offers you up to 25mb of data allowance a day for £10 a month or £2 a day. Well, it does but only on your phone. If you plug your phone into your laptop or try and use your sim in a dongle they will know apparently and charge you £10 a day!!!
I just got off the phone to them after a rather heated 45 minute phone call where I tried to get them to explain why they would charge me £10 a month for 25MB a day on my phone for browsing but if I then plugged my sim into a dongle or used my phone as a mobile and did the same browsing on my laptop using just up to the 25MB I would then be charged £10 a day. I never got a straight answer and basically in the end its just the way it is and I think its a bit of a con, loads of people will get caught out.
They reckon they will know if your accessing the internet on a laptop using the phone as a modem or with the sim in the dongle. Im not sure if this is a bluff. She says they always charge £10 a day for anyone accessing the net using a phone as a modem but I know this not to be true as when I hook my phone up to my laptop to quickly check emails abroad I have only ever been charged per MB or part of. Usually between 50p and a £2 for very quickly checking emails on webmail.
So the question is, has anyone yet put this to the test and had their bill?
Until we know more I would avoid this service if your thinking of using it as a cheap means of internet access abroad. Its a shame if its true as it looks initially like a good deal.
I find Vodafone very difficult to deal with. They are renowned for pulling fast ones and on numerous occasions I have questioned my bill when its had dubious amounts on it and always they have been wrong.

In defence of Vodaphone, the Data Traveller "offer" is shown on their website here under the tab that is headed "On your phone". Under the tab headed "On your laptop", there is no mention of Data Traveller but instead the 50MB £9.99 per day in Europe tariff. Therefore I can't see how it is a con?
Bottom line is caveat emptor, read the small print, and get a phone with a large display and lots of pixels, like my Desire
Android phones are on the market now with a quarter-full-HD resolution screen, probably not far off what the majority use for surfing MHF on their home PC/ laptop!
Because many of us are under the impression that its 25MB of data allowance on your sim. Why should it make any difference if you view that data on a phone screen or laptop screen?
I suspect Vodafone are assuming that data usage will be low on phones and that many will assume they can simply plug their phone or sim into the laptop and use the data allowance on there only to find out on their return that they have a bill not for £10 a month but £300 for a months use. Its just typical of them. I just dont trust them so I thought I would call and find out.
Perhaps Con is a bit strong but I feel I wanted to both warn anybody who like me thought they would get cheap access this year on their laptops and also in the hope that its a bluff and somebody will report back to say they have done it and only been charged the £10 a month.

I thought someone had tried Data Traveller in a dongle, and others intended to, but I agree I haven't heard any feedback.
Dave
I cant find anyone who has done it so far. I have posted this on 4 forums so hopefully we will get some feedback.
Im pretty sure if I hookup my Nokia N95 to the laptop it will work and they wont know. They havent in the past but maybe they got wise. Im so annoyed by this especially when they couldnt give me an answer as to why they would charge 30 times more for browsing the same amount of data on a phone than a laptop! (£10 a month on the phone £300 for 30 days use on a laptop)

Thanks Dave. I just hope if its true there arent any of our members out in Europe surfing the net everyday oblivious to the charges they (may) be running up.
Im off to calm down a bit!
