Thanks. It is interesting reading. Looks like legislation is already in place to stop bills above 50 euro unless you opt out and with any luck the reluctant providers will be forced to lower costs by further legislation.

Hopefully in a few years all this will be a thing of the past.

Perhaps there will be free wifi everywhere by then anyway!

"Last year the European Commission slapped a new cap on what it described as "abusive" charges..........and the cap will fall again this year further lowering prices."

Looks like they and the other operators have been rumbled and will not be able to continue to charge what the market will bear.

I suppose for most, competition and hence prices in their home market are more important than roaming when choosing a network. That is the way they get away with it. It didn’t need collusion.

Just thought I would update this thread. I have to admit that the vodafone traveller is working well. As addie has rightly pointed out to me on several occasions you can do most things on a smart phone.

I have just used my iPhone every day as normal, nearly always had 3g so far in Germany and I've hardly needed the laptop. When I do the wifi antenna has been very good.

I get a text each day from voda telling me I have the 25 mb allowance and they tell me I will get another one if I get near the limit which so far I haven't.

For £10 a month I think it's the best solution for me at the moment. Sorry vodafone.

I used to use my previous phone tethered to my laptop and didn't incur any extra charges. It was only when someone from Vodafone rang me to try to sell me a dongle that I found out I should supposedly be charged extra for doing this. Did they know I was doing it?

I now have a Vodafone dongle which I use when away in my motorhome and which my daughter uses sometimes at friends' houses. At only £5 a month I decided to go for it (special rate as a loyalty bonus, they say Rolling Eyes)

However, I can use my HTC Desire as a wifi router. How does that stand with Vodafone? It can run up to five devices - are they happy to allow me to do that using my "unlimited" phone internet allowance (or data traveller if abroad)? What's the difference between that and tethering - presumably I'm using the same service both ways so if they want to charge extra for one why not the other? Would they even know?

I don't use the internet much away from home so I'm just interested in finding out where I would stand and what people think. I don't want to ask Vodafone. Wink

"HTC Desire as a wifi router"

Oh, how I wish, Viv. Wasted a couple of hours on holiday trying to do this, though it must be said, that is not what you meant.

Yes, the HTC Desire works very well as a Wifi hotspot and I used this a week ago on holiday, using Vodafone Data Traveller 25Mb a day for 2 quid through my Desire to a netbook. The bill is in but haven't yet looked at it - if there is any more than 2 quid for each day I used it I'll come back.

As a router though, that's something else. What I was trying to do was share the a netbook wifi connection to the internet (via a Faculty-X range extender) amongst two wifi-enabled Desire phones using Internet Connection Sharing. I got ratty so gave up and had a G&T Smile I don't think the Desire's Android allows ad-hoc wifi connections, nor for it to act as a router, unless I root it, and I don't want to do that.

God I sound a nerd sometimes .....

Sorry Dave, that's what I meant. As a non-nerd I managed to confuse myself. Wink

I've been using mine as a wifi hotspot - I have "unlimited" internet on my contract and there doesn't seem to be anything extra on the bill.

If I can use my Desire as a wifi hotspot and not be charged any extra why should they charge extra for tethering? I'm not convinced they know when the phone's tethered as they didn't charge me in the past.

I haven't looked at the small print - maybe there's something in there that says I mustn't use it as a wifi hotspot.... Rolling Eyes

Well the answer is marketing and because they can, so they maximise income & profit.

I simply don't worry about, just ensure you have automatic updates including antivirus turned off so it doesn't use up your phone's data quota.
