I have just got Autoroute 2006, and I have to say I was very disappointed in the GPS navigation side of it, in my opinion virtually useless. It was not my intention to use it for that purpose as I use Infomap Navigator, but I thought I would evaluate it.
Had I known what I know now, I would not have wasted my money on the 2006 version, but it is in my opinion by far the best route finder.

In what way do you find the GPS navigation side of AR2006 useless?
I have used Autoroute for a couple of years now and find it excellent especially now that it has voice guidance in the 2006 version. I tried Infomap Navigator version 4 last year and got rid of earlier this year because it was so slow and cumbersome to use.

Can you clarify?
I was looking forward to AR2006 as I thought th navigation would be better than Navigator?

I to have Autoroute 2005 which for the past few weeks / months have been using to build an RV friendly sites data base for UK & Europe using map push pins.
On my Xmas list very near the top is Autoroute 2006, which together with my lap top and a USB GPS antenna also yet to be purchased I was going to use to locate my RV friendly sites,so KenS could you explain in very very simple terms why Autoroute 2006 is useless?
Thanks

Hi Dave,
I read with interest your comments, can you recommend a paticular one by name you might be saving my marriage as I'm married to the worst map reader on the planet!
Phil
Oh no you're not!
Good thread though. I suspect I will still be using maps for a while...but you never know. Boys and toys etc etc
I do have concerns about the restrictions my overcab may cause and also the costs involved
I have a Dell Axim x50v PDA + cheap bluetooth GPS (there are plenty of these on eBay for less than £50) I have tried a few different navigation software programs but TomTom 5 seems to be very user friendly & works reasonably well. The advantage of this setup is I can take it with me whilst out walking although in some cities with tall buildings it can sometimes be a problem getting a good signal. I also have Memory Map & can download areas of ordanace survey maps where we want to go walking.
With having the bluetooth GPS I can place it to get the best signal without having cables all over the place. I notice that nobody has mentioned Route 66 compared to Autoroute, I find this has some nice features such as being able to go onto the internet if you have a connection & give you information about holds - roadworks etc.

Very similar this end. Dell Pocket PC used for oodles of applications, bluetooth GPS, Memory Map and TomTom Navigator 5.2.
As to getting a good signal in dense urban areas (or under wet foliage, say), many Sirfstar RXs have a different mode whereby you obtain a navigation solution from more sats, which often increases the error but holds a lock like a dog with a bone; sometimes a better trade.
I've nagged Memory Map twice now to offer input from an FM radio traffic signal, a la Garmin G10 (or similar) matchbox (although this one proprietory) but they are not particulaly interested, which is a shame.

I looks as if I am going to be lynched judging by the postings, let me say first of all that I run Navigator 4 and very pleased with it, yes it’s a little bit clumsy, it’s also not the best route finder but it is a darn good navigator with little to fault it in my opinion.
With all the hype on Autoroute 2006 I thought I would give it a try, route finding wise I think it’s second to none and I will use it for that purpose, with regards to navigation, on occasions three of us could not understand what she was saying and this was working in my comp room through good speakers, I could find no set up for voice commands or warning distances for voice commands, to repeat voice commands I had to press the space bar, I don’t want this hassle I need to concentrate on driving, if I miss the first voice command I want it repeated automatically I also need a clear precise command, not have to think about what the voice said.
I will definitely stick with Navigator for gps navigation.
May I ask the lynch mob to give me a sporting head start

As a side issue Dave did you go to pocket gps, if so what did you think of the Drive Smart?

Not got one but there is some customer feedback there which is quite encouraging. Maps are not 3D but the price is nice! Argos do them quite cheap too if you want to get it on the high street and not mess about with the post this close to Xmas..

I've just got myself a second hand IPAQ with Bluetooth and have aquired TomTomGo so am going to see how that works, but to be honest it all worked out abotu £20 cheaper than the above system. The only advantage with the IPAQ is that I can use it outside the car for walking; with Memory Map or a hiking GPS system. That might also come in handy for green laning in the Rangie!
