Hi, I am currently on a site in Salbris, south of Orleans, France, which has free wi-fi. I can connect to it fine if I'm close to the reception (like now), using my Laptop's built-in wi-fi, but back on the pitch (which is out of range of my internal antenna) if I use my long-range wi-fi antenna I get the following:
It seems to connect OK, and the Realtek app shows good signal strength. It then goes to "acquiring network address" and, after a few seconds it times out, the signal strength goes to zero, and it starts again - it's like it keeps attaching and then dropping out,
It uses a wi-fi key, and I have the correct key.
I'm wondering ig anyone has any suggestions - this antenna has worked fine in other similar situations, I have disabled the internal wi-fi, so it;s not a conflict with that.
It's as if something else is trying to use the same channel / frequency, which is possible, but I can,t see many other access points.

I did have a similar problem when at Orbitur Evora late last year. At the time I put it down to signal reflection - i.e. the signal bouncing off something else (the toilet block)? and setting up multiple paths. I used a 8 metre active extension and moved the aerial to a different position and all was well.
Everything has been fine since and have never had the problem again. I have just put it down to the fact that the thing has so much directional power that reflections can happen and cause it to go into confusion mode.
Apart from that, great bit of kit, goodness knows how I ever managed without it.
No really an informed opinion but this should act as a bump. It's been said on the forum that although WIFI aerials are excellent at receiving signal, their transmission strength is nowhere near as efficient. You symptoms would seem consistent.

Thanks both. I agree, it could either be as a result of reflections, interference from other equipment using the same channel, mobile phone interference, or a weak return signal path.
It certainly not the aerial itself. We have moved on via Oradour-sur-glane and are now in Sarlat, where it is picking up the campsite wi-fi with no problem.
It will just have to remain an unresolved puzzle for the time being.
To increase the signal strength and range drop the unit down to 11mbps or even 1mbps.
The receive sensitivity inceases quite a lot at lower network speeds.
The cpe2512bg is:
-76dBm@54Mbps
-86dBm@11Mbps
-92dBm@1Mbps
each-6dBm gain effectively double the range of the device ( all wifi devices) so from 54mbps to 11mbps you will get a huge range increase.
11mbps is more than you will ever get from 99% of all hotspots and fon setups, if your very remote go to 1mbps as this is enough for general online stuff.

don't have one wih me at the moment but you should see a setting with various rates you can select go for 802.11b or 11mbps only rate and you will see the signal strengths on the connections go up.

@faculty-x Thanks, I'll give it a go next time I'm in a marginal reception area. I've been OK over the past few days.
Where the booster has really come into its own has been picking up the free wi-fi on campsites which are only really intended to cover the reception area (domestic-style single wi-fi router) - with the external aerial I've been able to pick it up on my pitch, which is much more convenient (especially when the reception is shut!).
I just stand on a stool and pop it out through the rooflight, stand it on the roof, and point it roughly in the direction of reception
