Also there is no point in having a big panel and no where for the juice to go........so you do need to balance the solar with your batteries.

Have a search on here as someone did write a very good article about solar and batteries

Cheers

2 x (new) 110 AH batteries and a 100W solar panel does me just fine for the summer, even in the UK. I run a TV off an inverter and the other "usual" stuff (LED lights though!!) But having said that I dont stay static for more than 3 or 4 days.

I have yet to run out of "wriggly amps" but I am sure it will happen at some point. Its all about balancing needs against cost against convenience. !!

I am about to have a 135W panel fitted by Aire & Sun near Hexham. This will be feeding 2 x 110 Ah batteries. We can already last 4-5 days in summer without trouble so I expect to become fairly self-sustaining.

Have a look at the A&S website - you might find the data sheets and guides useful reading (basic solar system guide in particular). You will see that they suggest 4 x the panel's power rating is what you should expect in summer. So for 280W of panels, you would get 280 x 4 = 1120 Watt hours. Divide that by 12V (nominal) and you can expect 93 Ah on a good summer day. There is also a reference to the issue of shade on the panel - basically something to be avoided.
