This may not really help but I checked the voltage of the '12 volt output' on my generator recently and it measured over 20 volts. I am not an expert but I don't think connecting that direct to the battery for charging would be a good thing, unless a charge controller was in the circuit. Am I right experts? If so I would prefer to connect via the 230volt input and use the 'van's onboard charger.

Was that no load voltage? I suspect it would drop considerably under load

Ah! Yes it was ..... but when reading about solar panels having a potential of, I think, about 17 or 18 volts and advice that a regulator is essential, then I guess that is why I am thinking it would be needed in this instance......... still, probably not too helpful to the original poster, or maybe it is ..... Confused

Hi,

Thanks for all your comments. A little clearer. What is a decent sized solar panel then ?

Very rough guide same number of Watts as the number of Amp hrs in your battery(ies)

BUT if you want to do things a little more scientifically see here >Solar Part 1<

I manage with 130W solar panel and 220Ahrs battery (I already had a 130W panel from my old MH where it sued to support a 125Ahr battery.)

We love our solar panel. Its an 85 watt jobby. We have two 100Ahr batteries (not matched)

This weekend we were off hookup for five days. We watched the Royal Wedding plus about another 5 hours TV watching. We all had showers everyday (pump uses a lot of power), lights whenever we wanted etc etc.

The light was good and of course at this time of the year its light at 6amish. We had no problems with power and our battery meter went from fully charged to three quarters at the lowest
