Hi,
I wonder if anyone could give me some advice on this.
I recently bought a virtually unused EU10i and the previous owner had kindly changed the oil for me.
I can see that there is a bit of a design problem already as he has managed to spill oil inside the casing and I can see he would had to have been VERY careful to avoid doing so.
Being a petrol head the smell of oil and petrol is pure perfume to me but I can see that the wife will complain if that smell is brought into the habitation area of the van.
My problem is that I can't tell if the smell is the oil he has spilt (very little now) or the natural smell of the generator.

Mine doesn't smell at all so i would suggest it is spilt oil . One thing you will find is that if you have too little oil in it , it won't start , there is a warning light , but that only comes on if the generator is going , which of course it won't , if you see what i mean . i found this out the hard way in the middle of a field near Spa in the rain !

It's just as essential as with any engine that there is not too much oil in. This will increase crankcase pressure and possibly damage seals.

Hi Bill, I've also got a 2nd hand one that I keep in the garage. I was concerned that if it was smelly the fumes would seep up through the fixed bed.

Provided I close the vent on the petrol filler cap there is no smell of any description.

We have an EU20i , it is kept in the garage on the m/h but I have never noticed any smells.

Changing the oil is quiet easy without spilling any. I use a 2 litre plastic bottle cut up as a funnel to remove the oil and the same to fill and dont get any spills inside the case.

Mine does not smell at all and I had no problem changing the oil without making a mess.

Thanks for the replies. I must admit I didn't expect a smell (when not running) so it must be the surplus oil.
I would have suspected a blown oil seal but I think you would have to try very hard or lay it on it's side to overfill it. But you never know.

Anyone one know where you can buy cheap accessories and spares? I see that things like covers cost $14 in the States and up to £50 in this country.

I have noticed a slight odour from mine, which has only been used a couple of times since buying new 18 months ago. Nothing that has ever bothered me that much. Your post prompted me to go and have a sniff around. So long as the cap is closed and the vent is shut, there is no smell of petrol. There is no smell either from the carburettor bleed tubes that run down inside the cover plate (so long as they are dry of course). Neither is there any small from the oil filler area, assuming it is dry and not holding oil residue.

BUT, there is a very feint whiff from the exhaust. Mine is in the garage of the MH and has not been used for about 6 weeks. Perhaps it is this that permeates the area?

I cracked the casing open during the week ( I wanted to have a look anyway) and gave it a good clean out and although the oil was only on the base there was even some oil in the bottom of te internal metal cowling. No leaks but I can see where it would get in if someone had not been careful when filling. So I ordered a pair of these (I do like a gadget) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150601969447&ssPa geName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I also saved £10 and ordered one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280642223119&ssPa geName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

The casing comes off quite easily but I would recommend using the correct size Phillips screwdriver in good condition as the 4 main screws are on very tight. There is also a sneaky little C clip hidden under the rubber petrol filler surround.
Putting it back together is quite easy but you have to make a note of how the engine mount rubbers, tubes and washers go together and note where the 3 or 4 rubber support blocks and covers go.

I saved another £10 on this (including postage) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120662349274&ssPa geName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

No smell now.
