Hi, I have a Status 530 ariel which I am considering removing, as I also have a tripod mounted dish for overseas use.
However I would like to know if the digital performance (through a decoder) is adequate for the rare use that I need in UK?
Supplementary question---will a Sky box work, or do I need Freeveiw or similar?

First question is why are you considering removing the Status aerial? Is it because it doesn't work, or do you need the roof space for a satellite dish.
If you do not need the roof space, why not leave the Status aerial where it is. The Status is still the best all round aerial available for terrestrial television reception on a motorhome or caravan. It is often more a case of understanding how to direct it. For more information see this:
http://www.motorhomefacts.com/ftoptitle-91771-getting-set-up-for-freeview-television.html
If you intend to go down the satellite route then you will need advice that I am not able to offer. I have a small satellite setup, but have never yet found a use for it.

In the UK we use our Stautus aerial plugged into our laptop via a fairly cheap dongle bought off the internet (£30ish). The laptop acts as our telly.

We bought a cheap signal detector to get the aerial pointed in the correct direction first (£20ish).

We generally get a reasonable reception of freeview channels unless we are in an obviously bad reception area such as at the foot of a cliff facing out to sea etc.

Sky box will only work in conjunction with a satellite dish, and if you want anything other than the "free to air" stuff you will need a Sky card !!

Setting up your own (tripod based) satellite system cheaply is dead easy. I did it for under 50 quid. PM me if you would like further info. It is very simple to do !!

we use a Status 530 via a £20 freeview box and a £15 signal strength meter and have never had any problem picking up Freeview in the UK, though the @thegamwellsmythes "bottom of a cliff pointing out to sea" caveat applies.

The trick is always to use the signal strength meter to align the aerial before bothering to re-tune the freeview box.

We have also used it all across France and rarely had a problem picking up a range of French free-to-air DTV programmes (no English channels, obviously) but nonetheless useful for the news, weather and music channels.

Thanks for all your interest.
I apologise for not making myself clear. I have tripod/ dish set up but wonder if (due to the digital switch over) I can continue to use the Status/ SKY box IN UK to view free to air stuff.

I think the answer is to use a Freeview/Freesat box in place of the Sky box.
When we are abroad, we have time to set up the tripod etc--but would like the convenience of the Status ariel when in UK.

I have PM'd you Mrplodd.

Just to make it clear; Freeview - Aerial, freesat - Satellite. Neither box is compatible with the other system.

It might be worth you getting one of these : http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_1000 1_catalogId_10151_productId_777401_langId_-1_categoryId_241001

Connect this and you should be able to point the aerial in the best direction from inside the van.

I know that's the case with the boxes - completely different animals etc.
but is the same with signal finders?

I.E. Can a satellite signal finder be used to align a terrestrial aerial?
