I'm a hopeless case when it comes to mobile phones. I try and read up on them and all the features but I could be reading Mandarin for all the sense it makes to me. Then I read the so called expert reviews and then the users reviews....Result..............I still haven't upgraded
Even my technophobic son has the new Apple iPhone and is raving about it (which really bugs me as he rarely picked up his old mobile).
Last phone I was recommended was the HTC Desire but I need to reduce our monthly bills as my hubby also needs to upgrade his phone (he is still using an ancient Nokia house brick) and I can't get o2 to offer us this phone for less that £21 per month. I was hoping to get our bills down to around £15 ish each per month.
Is that unrealistic? Are there any decent phones like the HTC Desire or the Apple iPhone out there in this price range? I keep hearing that if you tell your provider you are moving to another they will 'do a deal' for you. Well we have been with o2 forever -even before they were o2 but it counts for nothing by way of getting a loyalty discount.

well it really is what do you use your phone for. just phone calls, surprise..thats just me, and text of course.
there are plenty of modern phones for sale on the web, you can always have a sim only deal with o2. that should bring your bill down to £10 per month.contract.
Most people pay way over the odds for their mobile phone service. As has been said, there are loads of deals online (although personally I'd avoid any cashback ones unless they're automatic). Even if you want to go on the highstreet, Carphone will do a Samsung Galaxy Apollo (does 95% of what anyone will practicably do with an iphone) with 300 mins/1000 texts/1G internet for £18/month...and if you wait other cheaper deals come up, e.g. I'm pretty sure they had same handset with 100 mins/300 texts/500M internet for a tenner last week. It's beyond me why people lay out £25-30 and pay for a handset...
There is no such thing as a free phone on contract especially the iPhone. I have an IPhone which was given to me and I am on sim only with vodafone for 700 min unlimited Internet and txts for £17 a month. Unless you want to play with thousands of pointless apps or think it's a status symbol the iPhone is the biggest waste of money in mobile history. The email facility however is suberb but that's it.
Best thing to do is ring round the providers toward the end of the month to find the best deal and then give o2 the chance to beat it or better it. This is worth doing every year or two

I have no use for a fancy phone, some of the older phones are also far better, easier to use and longer battery life. To me a phone is for making mostly voice calls, text is occsionaly cheaper especially when abroad and that is it. If I want access to the internet I have a PDA or a Laptop and for music I carry around a USB stick and SD cards.

Whilst we would like a phone that is as up to date as possible it's not because we are looking for a status symbol merely a phone that will not become outdated in a few years time which would then 'force' us into upgrading it because it was failing. I worry about this as the newer phones have so many applications on it now so a good quality phone is essential.
We mostly use our phones for texting with just a few minutes calls every month. I would appreciate having Google maps on the phone and some Data allowance, and an easy to use screen for texting. My Hubby wants one with access to music but I'm not fussed about that.
What we DONT use a phone for is:
Web browsing
Video
Games
Twitter
Facebook
Our biggest issue is coverage: As a family we have tried Vodaphone, Three, O2, T Mobile and Orange.
The only one that works fairly well in this area (and generally) is O2. Which does rather limit us.

Like you I just want a phone for basic calls (only a few a month), texts etc. My 7 year old Sony Ericson phone (also on O2) was on the way out. Also I use a Garmin Satnav quite a lot.
I've just bought a Garmin Nuviphone M10 from Amazon. This combines an unlocked smartphone (Windoze mobile but there is an Android version too) and a proper Garmin Satnav with full European street level mapping. Half price at @ £175. The reviews sneered at its performance as a smartphone compared with iPhones etc but I don't care. I don't want loads of apps or an expensive contract so I can use Facebook all day.
The Satnav works the way I am used to. The phone is OK and has a virtual keyboard for texting. It seems well made and looks nice.
So, I now have 2 gadgets combined in one handy small package, using my existing O2 sim card that costs me only £10.20 a month. Result!
I use a motorola flip phone.razr V3i. this model has a large keypad and reasonable screen. cost me £50 off ebay and now £10 on sim only contract.it will text and work as a phone. will do lots of other things, but dont need them so dont have them. I change about every 3 years or if I drop it. again.same phone just a newer one.
wpild like one of those do it all phones but then I dont do it all anymore.
