Great when its fine and sunny but they are a pain in the butt when the wind gets up !!

I binned my safari room years ago, too heavy and too complicated, I now use the super lightweight windblockers from Lilypad for all of the reasons previously given !!

If the wind is getting up get your safari room down pronto is the safest course of action!!

Thank you everyone for your replies. The poll is not exactly conclusive but does demonstrate the doubts and fears of those that have posted so far. We have had the safari room up once in a VERY windy situation at Lake Trasimeno and was up all night checking it. There was not damage in the morning when it was taken down but it has prevented us risking using it since.

The safari room does have clips on each end that attach to a supplied storm lashing kit and we use that every time. There are lots of pegs inside and outside to fix it to the floor with flexible plastic loops and thick elastic, so it seems very secure when fitted; the worry was the way that the material of the roof (awning) was bulging upwards due to the wind blowing over the top and the rattling of all the fittings.

We have seen numerous caravans with safari rooms fitted permanently, are they a different type that can withstand the extreme weather? I think that we will play it safe and leave the safari room down and just make use of the awning when it is fine and calm.

We appreciate all your responses to our question.

We have the Omnistor safari residence which is a good bit stronger that the Fiamma. We use it right though the wintering all weathers however in strong winds it does flap about and that takes some getting used to.
I always tie it down with 2 storm straps and weight all round the outside with water container as well as all the tie downs. To be honest and in hindsight I would not have another one I would by a good quality day tent and use that instead.

I've used mine in a force 5 wind. Wouldn't use it in a full gale-force 7.

As others have said, use tie downs, one each side or two each side if it is bad. Use heavy duty pegs, not the tiny metal wire ones.

Just as importantly only use it in inclement weather if it's erected on the lee side of the van from the wind.

A lot of the flapping comes from the material of the awning flapping against the arms, so using a centre bar-tensioner will cut most of that out.

Good site Natterersee. Don't forget you can catch a coach to Innsbruck from the gates of the site.

we had the fiamma caravanstore and clip on system room on our caravan and we found that to be more stable than a normal canvas awning, although the roof did still flap about quite a lot with the wind passing over it, suppose its all down to how you feel about leaving it up and how secure you peg it down, we also had 2 lots of storm straps on it.

We had a full GH Awning and it stood up to wind with no problems.

Now we just have an Omnistor

Decided not to use the safari room as the weather has been good so far.

Went into Innsbruck today on the bus, very convenient from the camp gates; not so convenient on the way back when the bus driver ignored us in Natters village and we had to walk back the last 2.5 km. However, it was a lovely day and we enjoyed the walk.

Thanks again to everyone

Heres what we use, we slot it in and out as requires and put the ends on when we want. It only takes minutes to fit and remove.

Is that some kind of fishnet so that the wind cannot get hold?
