We had a Hi Ace some many years ago - it suited us providing all the facilities we needed for camping and being small enough to use as a day vehicle.

Are you a DIYer? As I'm now a solo traveller I've downsized even further to a Transit Connect. Bought a decent panel van and a few bits of ply etc and now have a compact camper that I can use for a daily run about. Suits me but may be a little tight for 2.

If I were you I'd go for either the Hi Ace or a VW Transporter. There are some nice Japanese imports out there at good prices but the majority are auto's which wouldn't suit me.

Good luck with your hunting.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. We have now bought a 1994 Toyota hiace Reimo campervan. Everything works and very little corrosion, as it was imported 6 months ago from Japan. I know a very good mechanic who has experience of them so its now having a cambelt and full service with oil and filters. Some friends came over to help give her a good clean. We had a cuppa, sitting in her, in the garage. Is this normal behaviour? I mean, we could have found a lay-by somewhere. Ill try and write about her when we make the first trips. The material patterns for curtains and seat covers are already chosen. Just need some curtain hooks, and we are away.

Oh yes ! My blood pressure goes down several points after a few minutes quietly sitting in ours. I never sleep as well at home as in the van either.

It's when you start to talk to it that you have to wonder whether you're going a bit over the edge....

Glad you're sorted. Enjoy your journeys.

I don't understand..... why do you want a campervan if you only want to go on daytrips?? why not just go in a car?

For your motor race meetings, what happens there? Are you planning to stay overnight? Do you need a bed? Are you taking any motorbike or racing car with you that you need to tow or store?

What are your requirements exactly?

There is a bongo forum not sure what it is called, but might be worth a look.

Bongo Fury

It's well worth considering a Bongo we bought one over 3 years ago and still have it, despite having had 2 full size motorhomes since then.

As said horses for courses and it all depends what you want and what you need - v- what you can make do with in the way of facilities.

I lent my Bongo to a Kiwi couple in 2009 and they did 11,000 miles around UK/Ireland/Europe in 14 weeks and slept (& everything else) in it for all those nights so anything is possible.
