Hi new to motorhoming but seven years caravanning experience. Opened the bonnet on our 2004 Swift Kontiki 635 (garage version) to try to find out how much weight I have to play with when it comes to 'stocking' the motorhome for a trip (clothes, food, awning etc).

I expected to find similar information to that shown on our caravan - the weight of the empty vehicle and the maximum weight it could be loaded to knowing the difference between the two was the weight of what we could take with us.

Under the motorhome bonnet we have a Swift plate showing gross vehicle weight of 3850kg and a Fiat plate showing gross vehicle weight of 3500kg, is the difference between the two the figure I am looking for or is it not that easy?

Comfortable with gross train weight, nothing contradictory there!

Help would be appreciated.

I believe that your maximum gross weight is 3,850 kg. To find out your maximum payload you really need to have the motorhome weighed on a weighbridge and then deduct that figure from 3,850kg.

The 3,500kg figure is the original fiat plated maximum weight. The motorhome manufacturer has then re-plated the vehicle to 3,850kg to allow a reasonable payload (since all the motorhome accoutrements add considerably to the unladen weight of the donor van - and hence reduce the payload accordingly).

To weigh your (empty) MH use the local weighbridges - they're free. Look in your local gov.co.uk web site under Weights & Measures to locate your local weighbridges. Our local one provides a front axle weight, rear axle weight and the the total .

As previous poster said then subtract this Total to find how much payload you can load - or you could go back to the weighbridge with your fully loaded van and check the Total doesn't exceed 3,850 Kg.

Hi There
Your MGW should be 3850 kg and you should maker plate saying 3500 kg

The thing you go by is the weight given in your log book it could be 3500 kg or if taxed correctly by the first dealer 3850 kg (some dealers recorded the 3500 kg as some owners only have a driving licence to drive up to 3500 kg depending when they passed there test)
If the weight is 3500 kg in the log book this can be up-graded via DVLA at you local office if needed .
Regards Mike

The Swift plate supercedes the original Fiat plate. It should also show your maximum axle weights (I) Front Axle and (II) Rear Axle and also probably a gross train weight (van + trailer). The axle weights will normally add up to a little more than your gross weight of 3850kg, but remember that you cannot exceed ANY of the weights shown.

As has been said the only sure way of knowing is to take it to a weighbridge fully watered, fuelled and passengered etc then you will know what's left.

You should also realise that any weight put rearward of the rear axle will have a greater effect than its nominal weight due to the effect of leverage by an amount based on how far back you put it.

The last information isnt correct vehicles with a gross weight of upto and including 3500 KG dont or shouldnt display the weight on the v5 and they fall into PLG regardless of the weight, vehicles 3501 and above display the revenue weight on the v5 and are in the classPHGV and are cheaper to tax. Your van is 3850 gross.( sorry wizzo meant the one before you)

Thanks for the information.

Yes our V5 says 9999kg so no help at all! Unfortunately we do not appear to have a local weighbridge but I think I have managed to find one about 30 miles away so that will have to do.

The caravan was easier to sort out!

Sorry Lads If my reply is out of date regarding the V5

They must have changed this in the past few years. My Mirage had the weight recorded as 3850 kg mind you I did have to get this changed from 3500 kg at our local DVLA in case I was weighed .

I recenty contact Fiat homologation regarding the VIN plates, your final stage manufacture gross train weight will also be lower than Fiat 6500 kg, this is because the rear chassis overhang to the standard chassis/cab and as a result recalculation has been necessary.
