Hi. Just joined after we bought our first campervan, a vintage (old?) 1983 Renault Trafic Romance. New engine was installed in 1990 though. Had our first trip last weekend and so far, so good. But before we go on any longer trips we would like to have all the van electrics plus gas appliances checked for safety and functionality. There seems to be loads of wires trailing around (including about 4 different TV aerial cables!), some of them not even connected to anything. We live in Manchester - does anyone know of a reliable and trustworthy firm in the North West who would be able to check these things over for us? Fear I may not be able to get my partner back into the van until we have had all this checked out! And if anyone can recommend a good garage to get the engine and van mechanics checked, serviced and repaired then that would be appreciated.

Despite it's age the van drives well and is comfortable inside. Looking forward to some good trips. It needs some updating which we will have a go at but need help with the more complex stuff so any pointers to good firms in the North West who can help with the above queries will help us get moving.

Thanks.
Great !

Hi GAD & welcome from another old Renault Trafic owner! Bit of a youngster to yours at 1985!
Had to have all the 12volt system re-wired and gas bit of fridge serviced but that's about it really.
Did have a habitation service as well, just in case there was anything nasty.
Can't help with garages/servicing I'm afraid as I'm at the other end of the country.
Hope all goes well with your van & you enjoy many happy trips.

Regards
Chris & Tilly.

Are you two aware of the Renault Trafic Motorhome Register? Quite a few members have vehicles your age. What their technical experts don't know about Trafic conversions ain't worth knowing.

Yes, signed up to the RTMR website too. Feel the need to surround myself with as much support as possible at the moment!

Thanks for the welcome ToffeeApple. Was the rewire job expensive? We've got a Zig Unit (DCU3?). Not much idea really what it does or whether it's working properly. The lights come on so something's working. I understand (I think) that it charges the leisure battery when you are on a hook up (checked this and it's working OK) and I think it also makes sure the other electrical appliances work properly when hooked up. No doubt we'll get our heads around it all soon. My partner's parents are keen caravanners so they are trying to educate us. My main priority is to check it is safe.

A few bits of rust but it's in remarkably good nick for it's age. Went to a festival in Cheshire a couple of weekends ago and it was lovely and comfortable. A new engine was installed in 1990 - only problem is we can't find a dipstick anywhere! It's got it's MOT in a few weeks time so fingers crossed. At least we may find out where the dipstick is!

I had a mobile engineer come to do a habitation service. He checked all the gas was safe (fridge service is extra) and found that, although I had a new leisure battery, that none of the 12volt stuff worked. Took him 2 hours to re-wire everything as it was all wired up wrong!
Cost me £99 all in, so not TOO bad.
Fridge needed service as didn't work on gas plus he bypassed the hot water boiler which was knackered, so at least I've got running cold water at the sink. About £120 as far as I can remember.
Not too bad considering her great age!
Got a few rusty bits - bit on the scuttle which needs sorting but mechanic thinks the windscreen will need to come out to do a proper job, so will probably just rust treat and paint and hope that will do!
It'a an automatic so nice to drive and very comfortable to sleep in.
LOVE my campervan!

Chris & Tilly.

That doesn't sound a bad price, and just the sort of thing we are looking for. How did you find the mobile engineer? I've searched in the North West but can't find anything similar. We don't want to spend a fortune but want to make sure it's safe. Tried to google for advice on the electrics but I'm a technical imbecile unfortunately so none of it makes any sense.

First chap who did the hab, service I found online.(Look for caravan servicing) Second chap was recomended to me by a couple while camping last year. He was very good & said he had several customers still running old Trafics, which was good to hear.
I'm OK on basic DIY but gas & electrics totally flummox me, as do the rusty bits!!!!

Chris & Tilly. Shocked Shocked

Just found this website

www.mobilecaravanengineers.co.uk

(link doesn't work for some reason).

They seem to be a network/trade body and training organisation for Mobile Caravan Engineers. Got lists of members by region so I'll try some of the members in the North West.

Cheers.

Hi Gad,

Just tried this link & it's working OK for me.
Must be somebody else in your area who services campervans/motorhomes?
Anyone else know of anyone?

Chris & Tilly.

This chap advertises at our Storage location in Chester.

I have no experience of him good or bad as our motorhome is still under warranty but once that runs out I plan on using him for habitation checks.

Caravan Man

Not sure if he'll go to Manchester but it's worth a go maybe.
