Hi
Been a member for some time but this is my first post.
We have been having some problems with the sprintshift on our 316 base Hymer.
In Portugal end of last year suddenly had problems selecting any gear from rest (bit of an embarrassment at tolls). Would jump out of gear pulling away. Was OK once driving - no problems with gear changes. Eventually had to get it towed to MB dealer in Aveiro. Replaced pump + valves etc - 400 euros for parts. Can't praise this MB dealer(Mercentro) enough - must have took 5 hrs diagnosing and 2 hrs sorting problem but only charged for parts and 1 hr (50 euros!) labour + oil. Anyway have done about 1000mls since and suddenly this weekend had problems again on way to Dartmoor. In Exeter stopped and took ages to get gearbox to select any gear. Eventually managed to drive on to Tavistock and campsite. Following morning took half an hour to get a gear so took decision to drive back home rather than get stuck in some impossible lane. Drove home (150mls) with no problem although took no chances and did not stop off anywhere. When we arrived home had no problem finding gear from N. Left van for hour or so and tried again, still no problem. Got up this morning and tried again, still no problem!!!!
When problem existed I could get display to show 1,N and R when ignition on but engine stopped (not sure here if gearbox actually engages without engine running). On starting engine could not get gearbox to engage - with gear selected and foot off brake display would flash N. Checked underneath to see if there were any oil leaks on tray or gearbox - nothing obvious. It is booked it in to Pentagon in Eastleigh for service at end of week anyway.
Not daft at all, I've seen this as a potential cause of issues with sprintshift electrics elsewhere in a Sprinter forum. However, Hymer did not see fit to abide by tradition and fit a switch. Certainly there is no light switched on when the door (passenger - German) is opened and as far as I can see there is not switch inside the door.

Well for anyone who does have a door switch.
The switch can cause issues.
The drivers door is connected to the ECU and Gearbox ECU.
If you open the door and are not at the controls, the system detects that you have inadvertently exited the vehicle and left it in gear.
This leads to the ECU's putting the gearbox into neutral as a safety precaution.
(there are other connections - bit long winded to go into detail).
I've had problems with stoplight fuse blown and if the correct sequence is not observed, and the 'N' is flashing, I have to switch off completely and start again

Happy Holidays to everyone for 2012
The above is only a personal opinion

Ok, thanks - my feeling is it looks more like an electrical problem than mechanical, will have to look at a wiring diagram.

Thanks for that. Checked all lights anyway as a pre MOT check no problems there.
Have you resolved the problem, I ask as I had similar problem and had new pump fitted with new relays and all great. However 400 miles later and symptoms starting again. I am wondering if it was a faulty pump
regards
Babette
Had it serviced by Pentagon in Portsmouth. They could not find any fault codes and felt that it was as a result of my tipping coffee over the dash. I can't caste any judgements here as I do not have any idea of location of any electrical components nearby - must admit it seems a bit of a thin argument. I have not done a lot of miles since but have had no problems.
