can someone help me out i have a low mileage 29000 motorhome petrol fiat ducat coachbuilt 1988, 1971cc
the engine is dry as a bone no leaks and sounds beautifu lupon starting the trouble is she is crap going up hills there is a slight popping sound upon acceleration from the exhaust baffle, i am about to give it an engine flush and complete survive, oil change, oil filter , fuel filter , air filter, new spark plugs will this improve my low compression , i have only her two weeks and i believe she was standing around over the years and may well be gunked up? although the dipstick is showing clean looking oil ?
hi, the 1.9 petrol engine you have in your motorhome will struggle on hills and would of done even when new. it doesnt have the low down torque of a diesel engine i'm afraid. the service will do it nothing but good though and you might see some improvement. welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy your van, all the best sean
I'm not sure about the popping sound but I wonder if it may be 'pinking'?
I'm no expert but if it is, I'd think you may want to check whether the ignition timing is properly set and the vacuum advance is working properly. You may also want to drop a gear up hills to keep the engine working at higher revs.
thankyou for that sean , i realise what your saying and i know exactly what you mean, my point is though its a bit tappety and it just seems as though the lack of oil changes and the fact its only done 29000 miles in 23 years suggests to me that the top end has got some crap in it from sitting about it just seems to have a bit of a cough on it, as far as the motorhome is concerned it immaculate and the engine you can eat off of, its like new , i stumbled across it whilst working for an old man who had lost his wife he wanted a good home for it , its got every MOT and its only ever failed on minor things but always passes, the last one being last week, i have been driving 30 years and i can feel the compression is not right, it might just need a HEALTHY LONG RUN?

The rings could be stuck/gummed up so try taking the plugs out and giving a squirt of WD40 into each cylinder, put the plugs back in and spin it over, then plugs out again and a bigger squirt into each cylinder before leaving it to soak over night.
Then try starting it and giving it a good run with plenty of revs.
check distributor sounds like sticking advance and retard .
remove distributor cap try to twist rotor arm back and forward
you should be able to feel springs resisting and returning it to centre
if loose or sticks or no movement. then needs overhaul.sometimes removing rotor arm and soaking centre of shaft with penetrating oil will free off. hope this helps.
how old is the petrol.
there is instances where the the engine as stood idle over winter the petrol in the carburretor starts to turn gunky around and in the jets, this is renowned on motorbikes.
treat your engine to some fresh petrol if it still as last years in the tank..
