I have to agree with Seanoo. The engine power never would have been brilliant in the first place and its inevitable that it will lose power over the years. However one thing I will say is that you would be no better off with the 1.9 diesel engine either. The petrol engine was the more powerful of the two but it would be at a higher rev range.

The old 1.9 diesel engine is a real slug. It has no power to speak of, especially outside of its 'power band' and is probably not much better on fuel consumption than the petrol version. The diesel turbo version was however much improved and modern engines are a long way removed from those of 15-20 years ago.

It would possibly pay you to have someone look at the ignition timing and set the tappets properly. I would assume that your engine runs from a distributor with contact breakers and these things will need to be regularly adjusted to maintain peak power.

I suspect your popping sound is caused by the spark plugs. They could be just old but may be the wrong plug. I have found over the years that some engines can be susceptible to running on plugs that are not the OE fitting - i.e. using a Champion equivalent when the originals were Nippon Denso or NGK. It could be that the heat range of the plug is just not quite the same.

I have an old Renault Trafic, 1985 as she has been getting a bit cranky over the last couple of weeks. Losing compression to the point of stalling on a couple of occasions.
Just had the mobile tuning chap out & he gave her a good seeing to.
The good news was nothing major wrong. Reset the idle mixture & speed and the timing & she is now ticking like a watch - until the next time!
I'd forgotten what a s*d carburetors could be!

Hi Corney. Maybe by now you have sorted your M/H, if not I will try to help. A burnt or sticking exhaust valve will cause popping in the exhaust system., also lack of power. Aproach the problem from the start point. Check the compression in each cylinder, it wants to be about 140psi in each cyl. To do this buy a cheap gauge from say Halfords. Then you know whats happening. If a low reading is found it has to be put right. First check the tappet clearances for that cyl, the exhaust valve has a bigger gap than the inlet valve. arround 10 and 15 thou. If you still have none or low compression on the cylinder the cylinder head will need to come off to replace the valve. Plugs, points, condenser, ignition timing etc will make it run better agreed. But if it is down on compression, your flogging a dead horse. P/M me if you want and I will talk you through it. John.
