Most of us leave our motorhomes for longish periods unused at sometime during the year.

What are the merits of leaving your handbrake on or leaving it off.
Not withstanding the usually jokes of..'it will roll away etc'

I'm interested in anyone's thoughts

Brian

Hi

Handbrake off here when parked for more than a couple of days.

I had an "L" reg Astra that I left unused for six weeks in winter of 1996. The "somethings" stuck to "something else" and then "something leaked" - £500 repair bill but I part ex'd the car as with 100,000 miles in just over two years, it was not worthy of the cost of repairs.

Handbrake off when stored for long periods - leave it in gear. Stops things sticking on, rusting etc

Handbrake OFF,if on level then put in gear, or a couple of blocks on wheels.

Hi Brian,

Handbrake off when stored (at home on a sloping driveway).

Why?
1. Avoids the brakes sticking on - when I have inadvertently left it on there is usually a minor resistance to movement when subsequently released.
2. Leaves the handbrake cable free of tension (not sure if that is a real benefit or simply one I am simply talking myself into).

Always leave it in gear, and chock the rear wheels when at home.

Regards,
John

Def OFF & chocked, in gear as above.
If brakes are hot from a long trip and you leave the hand brake on, (esp in a damp atmosphere) you are asking for them to seize on.

A mate of mine did it on his Ifor Williams trailer. It made a bl@@dy good ground anchor with 2 tonnes of sand in it Laughing It took a couple of days to get it moving Surprised

Hi Brian

I always leave mine at home with the handbrake off. I put bricks behind the rear wheels as the van is on a very very slight slope.

It seems better to me that if they should stick the shoes are off the hub or disc. At least that way you can get to them easier than if they are jammed on.

Certainly over long lay up periods (winter) I think it is more important, but for a couple of weeks?

Mark

MHF at it's best. I had never even thought about this until I saw the thread. Now I can see why releasing the handbrake would be advisable. A trip down to the storage depot early next week is now called for.

We are off as well-- as on my own car the handbrake used to stick when I left it parked and I didnt use it and every time I went for MOT I had to pay for new brake linings.
