All is not quite as it first seems I am afraid !!!
If you bore down into the technical information you will find the following
The location of the tank is basically any space where it will fit. The tanks are smaller that for petrol conversions, due to the gas/diesel mix being about 20%. Our 7.5 ton DAF truck has a 60 ltr tank, which runs as long as the diesel tank (measures 315mm diameter by 800mm long).
So its NOT a "conversion" to LPG as you get in a car its an addition!! It uses some LPG to augment the Diesel NOT replace it. (20% mix)
I can find NO mention of the fact this conversion eliminates the "particulates" which is what the bolt on exhaust filters (if they ever appear) will do and its the particulate emissions that the LEZ is all about.
Before shelling out any money I would ask them if the fitting of this system will satisfy the LEZ people. They make mention that any vehicle converted MAY qualify for lower VED (road tax) band but thats all.
I will repeat it is simply NOT possible to run a diesel engined road vehicle solely on LPG. If it was and if the savings are as huge as is being suggested dont you think all of the huge fleet operators (Tesco, Asda, Stobbart, DHL, etc etc) would have all of theirs runnimng on LPG ???
The German tuning company - Goldscmitt - showed a Fiat Ducato X250 which was modified to run on lpg.
The vehicle started on diesel and then switched to lpg.
This was shown at the 2009 Dusseldorf show - i have not seen anything further, but the conversion looked fairly costly by the amount of additional bits fitted.
I dont believe the conversion was in any way intended to solve emission problems.
Here is the information received from Tomsetts when I enquired about the filter that they have on test at the moment.
Yes we have had a prototype filter fitted to our customers vehicle for several months now. The vehicle is running fine and our customer is not experiencing any problems. Subject to TFL's acceptance the filter should be in production by July.
The filter is a dry system so there are no costly additives needed to help it operate. The system should regenerate and clean itself regularly, there is a small flow gauge fitted to the vehicles dash which confirms the state of the filter. In most driving conditions the filter will look after itself, but if the gauge does show that the filter is beginning to block then it would be necessary to carry out a regeneration drive cycle, (driving for a short time in a lower gear than you would normally use for a set distance). This is the same for most modern diesel vehicles which have factory fitted DPF's as standard. At this stage we do not see it necessary to have a yearly service ( clean the DPF), but depending on the vehicles use and drive conditions, some vehicles may require a periodic service. I will investigate the cost of this and we will include it in our information on our web site.
The DPF will need to be certified which we will carry out at time of fitting. It will also need to be recertified annually and we are hoping to carry this out at the same time as the vehicles yearly MOT, but at present it has to go to a VOSA HGV test station at a yearly cost of £32.00.
I take it that your Hymer is based on a Fiat Ducatto Chassis with the 2.8TD engine. The cost for this type of engine is £1300.00 for the DPF kit. £300.00 Labour. VAT @ 20% £320.00. Total £1920.00.
I am sure that there will be some discounts around for certain clubs etc, but these have not been finalized.
