My wife and I are planning to buy a LHD motorhome to tour foreign parts.

I believe that it is cheaper to buy in Germany than anywhere else. Can anybody confirm this? If so, where should we start? What cities are best?

And if anybody has done it, including importation into the UK, do you have any tips or advice?

Many thanks

Harry

Hi Seeker

If you search the site you will find masses of information on buying LHD in Germany. Look at the "Importing" forum

Expect to pay some 25% to 30% less than the UK forecourt price for you M/H and have much wider choice. Where to look is almost irrelevent, M/H dealers are plentiful in all parts of Germany, it's an obsession there. We bought our new one from

We can thoroughly recommend this dealer.

Just read your message. Have you been able to find anything?? We have bought a couple of times in Germany and are very pleased with the motorhomes and service. Always went to the same dealer. If you have not found anything then let me know as my motorhome is up for sale ( 5 berth) or can let you have the address of the dealer.

Thanks Maddie - but we have found and bought one. We scoured German and Dutch sites but found hardly any that we felt worth going to look at - and they weren't cheap either!

In the end we struck very lucky in finding the very LHD Hymer we were looking for, right here in the UK on private sale. It was advertised on some free website somewhere can't even remember where!

It was newer and more expensive than we planned but in the end though it very good value for money. So now we have it and are almost finished kitting it out.

Harry

Hi Harry,
Glad you found one. I can't imagine that you have not been able to find a cheaper one in Germany. Bad luck. I can imagine that you have not found it in Holland as they have a luxury tax on all motorhomes. It starts with 40% on new vans and goes down with age. Years ago , when we were looking for our first van, I thought to buy in Holland ( my home country!) but soon noticed the difference in price with Germany, so I rang a Dutch dealer and they explained the luxury tax to me.
Good luck and happy travelling

I have just come back from Lille today and I popped in to the 2 show rooms that are next door to each other. This time i had a good look around.

I counted around about 200 MH's between with all the typical German, French and Italian makes both new and 2nd hand.

Anyone looking for a left hand drive but not sure what style/type to get it is well worth a visit to these show rooms.

Has I said in previous post Lille is 1 hour from Calais and only 1hr 40min from London on train.

Taxi to the retail estate where these show rooms are about 20 euro
