I've often thought about going down the SB route, but shyed away for loads of reasons, Main one being, non of my mates are into DIY and none have any skills which might be useful, so how do you get help with the two man tasks.

It'd be great if someone local to me was having a go, I'd leap at the chance to help, and I'm fairly handy, and have most of the tools needed already.

Anyone near Pudsey need a hand, PM me,(might start a topic for that alone) all I'd ask is help in return, and someone to bounce ideas of and give me confidence.

Where do you go to get the insulation sprayed on, B&Q tins doesn't seem like the way to go.

Is it worth getting an ex ambulance if so which model, as we'd prefer access direct from the cab.

Lots of other moronic questions to follow

Buy the newest van you can. There is a lot of work involved

I used kingspan, loft insulation and silver bubble wrap and you will not find a better insulated van

keep the questions flowing

Hi, its really hard work for a start, make lots of plans and
get lots of help, but if you do start you will need a lot of staying
power to keep going, I started with an 03 Ducato 2.8jtd maxivan.
using 2nd hand bits off ebay, not good, try to buy new
There are lots of helpful SB sites on the web, use them.
My van is finished (so am I) I am a mechanic so electric`s water and
gas was no problem, wood work is not my forte, but somehow I
managed using beech and ply even used a router, if you start
dont stop, it might help to get a divorce first, but it does get easier
as it goes on. only thing is, now Im too old to go anywhere.
Gooood luck.
JB

Like Antona , House insulation like Kingspan or simalar Celotex is great for insulation not sure about fixing anything to it though.Celotex are based in -- Lady Lane, Hadleigh , Suffolk.---,They have a technical help department ,Tel . No 01473 822093 , Celotex and King span are available from most builders merchants and B&Q ,hope this helps .

Kingspan is I would have thought too rigid for the curvature of vans, rockwool too limp, hence me plumping for spray foam, as well as it holding other components in place, it's an excellent adhesive and as it is in close contact with the van walls, it event gets behind the roof/wall supports, it almost kills the condensation problem, and I don't have to cut the bugger to size, less waste, but cost is an issue as ever.

I've not read up on this too much as there is so much variety of opinion on how to do the different aspects of the whole job, I favoured getting a Mini bus or Ambulance.

I'm torn between buying a caravan and ripping every useful part out of it, cost being a huge issue here, or buying what I need when I need it, maybe via Ebay or O-Learys, (We got our first MH from Mick, he's a winner that one, but I made him work for the sale #Black smile #Black smile)

I'm leaning towards a LWB Sprinter or LT 35 or variants, Fiat, Citroen, Peugeot, or Renault are not (IMHO) long enough, Renault would be the only one of those four I'd even consider as it's the only one with a strong enough load area, (20 years as a courier tells you where the weaknesses are) sevel have back/side doors so weak I'm surprised they don't fall off, (can only rate pre 2002 vans except for Merc/VW).

We're not going to be buying anything like a new van, so the bus/van option tend to have lower miles, and exceptional servicing compared to a ex builders van.

As before any and all subjects up for discussion, I'd rather have a different opinion anyway, it will tends to open my eyes to other ideas, which I can consider.
