We got rid of our safari room and now use one of these, also we have a set of the windblocker shades from Lillypad leisure.. Total cost for both types is under £300 and gives up a lot more flexibilty....

Just remember that you will have to extend your Omnistor a short distance in order to thread the beading into the "C" channel. which you8 dont have to do with a Fiamma (its actually a LOT easier to extend it a long way out to do the job. Dont forget to put the legs down though!!! An awning extended only a short distance puts a LOT of leverage on the roll out awnings fixings !!!
The Kampa Rally 390 would fit into the awning rail and there are 3 heights. The standard caravan height which fits our Chausson but I think you may need the Kampa Rally Motor which has either L or XL height.
We want an awning for our Autotrail Apache but do not want to spend the £1000 needed to buy an Omnistor Safari/Residence Room.
Has anyone any recommendations on a cheaper type awning which will fit in the recessed awning channel on the Autotrail.
Looking for a 3.5 to 4 m awning and preferably not a driveaway. The motorhome is the new chassis type (2009).
Thank you
Is it the roll out awning or the sides for one that you want?
I bought an omnistor room and found that it was too large to store, too heavy and took too long to set up and take down. So I designed these awning panels to make more use of our awning.
They are lightweight, fold up small, take no time to fit and let lots of light into the van while cutting enough glare to allow us to eat breakfast and supper without being dazzled by the low sun.
Make sure you get an awning for a motorhome and NOT a caravan. The caravan awnings are not tall enough. They will fit OK but you will find the habitation door either will not open wide or will rub on the roof panel of the awning.
Auto Trail motorhomes tend to be a little on the tall side and although Suncamps will fit some motorhomes, they may not be ideal for yours. make sure if you buy one you can take it back for a full refund if it does not fit.
Buy at a show and then you and the dealer are quite close and no expensive post and packing will be involved to send it back if it does not fit to your satisfaction.

To second what DJP says...a caravan awning may just fit on the level, but as soon as you have any kind of slope away from your van on the pitch, you'll find you have a rather large gap at the bottom. Don't do it. Even the Kampa 390XL referred to earlier is on the limit...max height 290, which is (from memory) the height of the AT rail.
As others have said, consider sunblockershades for fair weather conditions. We also have a driveaway that we use for longer stays or if it looks like it'll be windy (Movelite XL) : we don't use the driveaway capability, but being designed for motorhomes it's fine for height. If you keep an eye out, they quite often come up second hand for £100-150.
Incidentally safari room sides do as well, but it's for a reason...they're a pain to put up, heavy, and most people sell them after one or two uses...
We have a sunncamp 260 awning that we use on our apache 700
the door just touches the roof of the awning slightly when you close the door but it is just slightly.
We have been using the sunncamp regulary for over a year now with no problems, beats the safari room that we used to have it's alot lighter to carry and is far easier to 'put up' and take down
When we decided to have an awning we looked for about 3 months at various awnings on site whilst we were in Spain. We asked fellow campers if we could measure the actual awnings and not just take the measurements from the blurb.
The Sunncamp roof falls more steeply than the Kampa and in our case would have been caught when we opened the hab door. The Kampa gives more clearance.
We did have a safari room but after 2 winters and the worry every time it is windy we decided to go down the awning route. Friends lost their safari room and their canopy was torn this year.
Am I right in thinking that a driveaway awning such as the Movelite XL provides a sealed 'awning area' negating the need for a skirt to be fitted to the motorhome. Being a relative newbie have never been in a driveaway before!
