Hi,

The recommendation that I received from our local water company was to flush out with a quarter teaspoonfull of household bleach.

After each trip, I add the bleach before filling the tank with fresh water and running the taps for a minute.

Before leaving on our next trip I drain the system, refill and flush the tank with fresh water, in the last twenty years we have never had any problems with the tank or the system itself.

We are still alive and kicking.

Regards

Drew

Dennis my thoughts are, as you use your van at least as much as we use ours then the amount of fresh water passing through the tank should keep it nice and sweet. After all you don't see water companies disinfecting or sterilising their mains supply pipework at any time.

Our van is 4 1/2 years old and has never been cleaned, as in the sterilising way, at all. I do take a peek init now and then to check for foreign matter but only ever had to fish out a bit of PTFE tape!
Oh.....we do drink the water straight from the tap, but only in an emergency when we are out of beer or vino. Very Happy

Putting Coca Cola into the systems is supposed to clean the
water tanks.

I think you can also use the non-branded coke.

I used steradent tablets for the fresh water system, and am currently "swishing" around, 8 litres of coke in my waste system. The swishing around, in case any one is wondering, is using the vehicle just for driving in, rather than using it for its purpose. I will be draining it out at the weekend, and will then report on success/failure of use.

We just got our Camper.
So before we first used it.
I used Milton.
Poured it in the filler cap.
Took the lid off the tanks and gave it a thorough scrub inside.
Then pumped it through the taps.
What's good for a baby has to be good for us.

With the shower head I soaked it in diluted bleach for 15 mins..

The water tastes. ok.

Whe filled at home.

However we did fill up at a site on the Gower and the water tasted pretty grim.
But chatting to others on the site they had the same problem.

I rinsed the tanks out when we got back and hey presto

Back to normal.

Not sure about the coke thing.
it certainly cleans metal. But not sure i want soemthing that corrosive and sticky sloshing around my freshwater tank.

it's OK with a load of Bacardi mind

I, too, am not too sure about putting cola in a drinking water tank.

Soft drinks are infamous for containing loads of sugar, the ideal environment for breeding bacteria.
You would have to be scrupulously careful about rinsing the tank afterwards to remove even microscopic remnants of cola.

5th year of full timing and we only use uk chlorinated water to keep all our lines clean(god knows what it does to your insides) we drink water from our main tank via an excellent AQUAPURE marine filter changing the filter everyear. would use a cleaning liquid only after leaving the system dry for a winter or if buying a used van

You should take the same precautions with Milton that you would household bleach. After all it is the same chemical (sodium hypochlorite) even though of a weaker strength and with added sodium chloride.
Don't splash it about as coloured clothing will lose colour and if clothes aren't rinsed immediately with copious amounts of water they will develop weaknesses and holes.
