Household bleach contains surfactants which may cause taste problems, also bleach will loose its strength over time (50% in 3 months shelf life)so it cannot be relied upon when calculating the dosage strength which is paramount. Water company's do clean their mains when they have been exposed to the atmosphere using sodium hypochlorite at varying strengths dependant upon the contact time employed they also use hygiene methods when doing repairs. From time to to time they may use pressure flushing and air scouring too. Of course M/H tanks are exposed to the atmosphere all the time so I do agree prevention is better then cure and for some micro-organisms there is no cure. I drink from my tanks so I ensure that they are clean using my regime guide see my article here

Graham
