Hi,

Do you mind me asking what your qualifications are in the field of generators?

No I don't mind at all,

I ran my own electrical businesses for many years before selling up, We reconditioned all types of electrical equipment. We also did repairs for the trade and retail customers.

However anyone with a half decent oscilloscope would be able to see the difference between the waveforms of a poor quality genny and a good one.

I am stating facts about the difference between a cheapo generator and a good one, and I have only stated the issues with the electrical side I have not mentioned the quality of the mechanics!

I suppose the easy way to solve the issue is see if the Aldi genys warantee covers any damage it causes?

I suppose the other alternative is err on the side of caution and if you but the geny get the surge protector suggested. That way you get a cheap geny and protection.

Addition:

This page gives some details of genys surging.
http://www.emergencypower.com/generators-and-surge-protectors/

Doesn't say it's only cheap ones that can cause the issue.

That would be via their insurance, so you know how they work. How can you prove that an item did not just fail or was damaged.

I wonder if you could use one of the Belkin pc type surge protectors that come with an insurance gaurantee? Might be a cheap easy and safe method of using a cheap geny?

I was always advised;

"Only a rich man can afford to buy cheaply......"

we bought a Honda since we will not be using it every day and wanted something that is reliable and safe.

I know nothing about generators and was advised by many others who had no axe too grind, they were not selling such things, merely reporting on how they had found them to use.

Hi Dave,

I can remember people saying very similar things about Japanese motor bikes, cars, cameras and electronics when they came on to the British market.

I think we have similar situation now with products like generators form China. If there isn't there should be a saying which says "only a fool judges the quality of a product by it's cost".

Hi,

Yes a good idea. I have fitted one after my Elektroblok was damaged when connecting to an EHU on a C&CC site.

Never had a problem with my 2 stroke or 4 stroke generators.
