we are off to France in 2 weeks (2 adults and 4 children) and the dilema of how to bring 6 bikes has hit ....
The camper has a fiamma 3 bike rack at the rear.
I was going to attach a tow hitch and put an extra bike carrier on this , but there is no clearance as the fiamma bike rack is positioned above the tow bar.
Tying the bikes to the roof rails may be an option , but this awkard and might not be safe ?
I was also looking at trying to attach a bike to the roof ladder , but there are also safety issues....
There must be a solution out there to carry six bikes ???
All suggestions welcome !
We have carried 5 bikes in our van. We had a Fiamma 4 bike rack on the back and carried the 5th in the garage along with all the other junk. In our case we had bunks in which the bottom one folded up to create the garage.
I would have thought even if you had the space your greatest problem would be the weight of everybody and their luggage. You don't say your exact model of van but check you have the payload for 6 people and bikes.
Depends where you are going but the French are very keen cyclists and many campsites, tourist bureaux and shops have bikes for rent at reasonable prices. There are many French towns and cities which have hire bike schemes from racks in the town as well.
Perhaps take the children's bikes on your rack and hire for the adults ?
The solutions easy, put two on a rack then tie some rope round the remaining four bikes handle bars then tie the other ends to the ladder on the back. sit the riders on the bikes set off.. Problem solved..
It just needed some thinking outside the box.

It is worth pointing out that the recent activity on this thread has been started by someone resurrecting the thread which concerned a trip to France at the start of August.
I suspect that the OP would no longer be checking this thread for suggestions.
We saw a French registered van with six bikes just the other day - in two lots of three one on top of the other.
I couldn't make it out but it looked like it either two seperate racks (two tiered / double decker) or one big one - but it looked like Fiamma and very safe / professional. This may mean relocating your existing rack but the holes are easily covered with Fiamma blanking plates.
There is bound to be an existing solution given the prevalence of 6 birth vans etc. What are you doing with 4 kids anyway, do you not have a TV!?

Yes, but it all goes in the book of information. Should someone do a search!
