The man who put mine in winked at me when he said it must be connected at all times. Think its to collect data on what we watch. Mine has never been connected as it made a mess of my internet connection having something else plugged into my phone line.

If you don't have the box connected to the phone line you will get one warning letter, ours was after just one month.
The following month they will charge you full price for your second box.
I can confirm this from experience.
Also if you dont have a phone line the engineer should refuse to install the box and you will still be charged the instalation fee.

Ditto what JP said. We've never been charged the extra, but have had warning letters when a dodgy microfilter / dodgy extension cable (i.e. 2 separate occasions) caused one of the boxes to be disconnect for a prolonged period.

NB this is with multiroom AND premium channels...I strongly suspect the difference in enforcement is down to whether you've got both in combination.
