I to have found Autogas 2000 very helpful in explain problems to me, the van was habitation checked each year, but to be fair the corrosion was taking place under the rubber sleeves and could not be seen. I have taken some photos but they are to high a resolution to get then on here I am not that good with photos. I removed the tank yesterday to fit new straps and was horrified to find the paint is just flaking off of the tank even at the top where it is protected. I had also fitted a splash guard to the from of the tank to protect it from road debris when travelling. If anyone can tell me how to get the photos uploaded I think the picture may spur people to check their tanks as well as the straps.
these were picked off using my finger nail!! sorry it is taling up space but i am only managing to put one photo at a time on the page??
These tanks powder coating are quite durable when new but if left then a simple stone chip will allow water to creep and allow the rust to form just like what you pictured.
In your case this is evident on the barrel side of the tank so I would advise that the tank is cleaned by hand using a wire brush to clear the loose off, and then zinc coated before refitting.
The tank material used though is very durable 3mm steel plate and will decrease if the rusting is allowed to go unchecked over the years.
After fitting a suitable underbody sealer or stone guard should be applied to seal the tank and frame from water ingress.
WITH RESPONSE TO THE RECENT POST ON THE GAS TANK STRAPS. ALL MEMBERS READING THIS SHOULD GET THE STRAPS CHECKED OUT. MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS THE SAME AS THE MTH CONTACT ONE . I AM AMAZED THAT I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A MAIL ON THIS SUBJECT.ANY EX CUSTOMERS OF MTH CAN HAVE THE A INSPECTION OF THE STRAPS CARRIED OUT FREE BY MAILING ME AT autogas.motorhome@virgin.net.
May I point out that any installation carried out by MTH that ceased trading in 2008 will by now have gone through the VOSA MOT . Although it is not directly part of the MOT it is likely that the examiner will have picked up on it . I did talk to STAKO POLAND about my own concerns on the quality of the straps. With this in mind MTH used Stako frames not their straps. The straps used were high tensile manufactured by PRINZE.The customer was offered the option of having the whole installation finished in WAXOIL . This was used in preference to any dry coatings that are available on the market.
Thanks to OP - checked my MTH fitted tank looked ok but fitted two additional stainless steel straps and bracing struts to the tank frame then gave it all a good waxoiling
Had same problem with chosen tank not available so two visits to get correct tank fitted
Arranged to meet MTH at Northern show to fix none working tank contents gauge but "no show" - no contact from them to say they had ceased trading and would not be there ro fix the problem
