Hi Folks

Asking for a friend, but it's of interest to me also.

What is the difference with the chassis/axle on the Alko maxi/heavy chassis?

IS there really one?

Friend has a Rapido 7098. It's rated at 3850Kg, he recently fancied dabbling with a scooter [85Kg] and got a rack [40Kg].

He went to the weighbridge, and has come back as a fat boy, a bit overweight at 2080Kg on the back axle. Needless to say scoot and rack are being removed.

He has AMC Alko, which is 2000Kg rear axel and 15" rims.
I have Alko chassis and my rear axel is 2100Kg I have 16" rims.

This got me thinking, is there actually a 'heavy/maxi' chassis or is it a crafty plating/wheel exercise??

What would you look for to identify your own chassis?

w

Hi,don't know if there is a difference but my Hymer (Alko chassis) is plated at 2200kg on the back axle,so I am guessing it might be a wheel and tyre thing?

Our Rapido 7090 (Alko) is plated at 3.7t. Front axle is 1850kg and rear axle 2000kg.

We usually run fully loaded for a big trip at about 1750kg and 1900kg (No towbar or bikes but with full fresh water)

Ours is rated at 2400 so they must vary from model to model.

I think Fiat/Alko do two chassis - a 35 Light which I have got and which has been replated by SV Tech to the maximum of 3.85 tonnes.

Then there is the Heavy Chassis which I think can go to about 4.25 tonnes.

There must be a strength difference between the two when bearing in mind the differences mentioned above.

I'm trying to establish:

A. there is a difference in the chassis's
B. Wether or not it's just the axle is a bit more beefy.

Said mate called SVTech who said IF he had a standard Fiat set-up [not Alko] there is a way to increase the capacity of the rear axle to 2250Kg!

This is not possible with the Alko set-up... allegedly Question

This is MY understanding of it all..
The alko chassis is a complete rear axle and ladder chassis that attaches to the rear of the fiat cab just behind the driver, ie only the cab is Fiat and the chassis is added. Oh and it's aluminium.
The maxi chassis is fiats own as it comes out of the factory, so you have a cab with original chassis and fiat rear axle, the van converters make em longer by adding on their own extensions.
My Autotrail 700 is built on the fiat maxi chassis the rear axle was 2100kg but have had airride fitted and re-plated by sv tech at 2300kg. Gross was 3850 and now 4100kg.
16" wheels with tyres rated to suit.

I guess lots of vans will be different on rear axle depending on type of axle, wheels size and the overhang on rear etc.
