The bulk of any benefit from solar panels comes from the feed-in tariff (which Solvis will retain). You'll only save approx £70/yr.

When you come to sell your house, put yourself in the position of the buyer. Would you be happy at the prospect of a £70 saving, or would you be put off by a 3rd party having their equipment on your house. Chances are it could put off at least some buyers.

If you choose to go down this route, some companies allow you to go down the free installation path, then subsequently buy them out to receive the feed-in tariff.

There's no catch!

There are two options when fitting panels to a domestic property.
Every unit produced is registered, and a payment made of around 44p per unit produced, whether you use the unit, or feed it back into the national grid.

If you buy the panels, you get both this payment per unit, plus the benefit of electricity produced by the panels that you use, instead of grid electricity.

If you have the panels for free, the supplier/fitter gets the unit price for what your panels produce as payment, and you get the benefit of electricity produced by the panels that you use, instead of grid electricity.

I'm in the catchment area and have a south facing roof. My 3 bed semi detached doesn't have enough roof space to make a (free) installation viable. Only 5 panels will go on my roof, which wasn't enough for them. Tried 4 companies with the same result.

Satisfied now I´ve gotten rid of my Marquis supplied Autocruise- both were rubbish!

There was similar thread running a month or two back - cannot find it so I assume I posted it in Off Topic and it has dropped under the 30 day rule;

There may be no catch per say, hover the company who own the equipment effectively own your roof, an amendment to the deeds of your property will be required for the duration of the contract, usually 25 years.

It would certainly put me off buying your house.

you never get much for nothing...

I'm buying panels outright and then get the whole feed-in tarriff and the benefit of free electricity.

I would do this however many or few panels you can get on your roof. Long term view on utilitiy pricing is that is't going up. Therefore any free power you can generate is a bonus.

I agree with the comments above though.... the free panels and you have the power from them is a big risk with minimal benefit. I also object to the ambiguity of the adverts which are very misleading.

Seems to me the free panels ( if you can get them ) might best benefit the elderly as a means of eliminating utility bills altogether as the fit /use of generated effectively cover cost of heating...

As for those who buy , it seems its common to fit panels rated at 3.9kw but they will never produce that figure in the real world so you re short changing yourself on the 4 kw cut off point for feed in tarrif you re allowed to generate with maximum payment...

Makes you wonder if it would be worth adding a panel or two procured at a reasonable price off ebay !
