Hi

We're in the process of choosing and buying a Hymer Starline (Mercedes base). We tested one yesterday (first time we've actually driven in one) and noticed that the ride quality was very soft and bouncy. Is this normal with these vehicles?

Any other advice (this is a Hymer S700 Starline) would be really gratefully received!

The 416 series did not suffer with softy suspension, unlike the 3 series that was like a dinghy on high seas. We have had both.

I suspect the suspension on the 7 year old van may be giving slighlty or very close it is GVW.

What is the mileage please?

TM

You could always add another leaf spring, replace the springs and or add assisted air suspension.

GVW = Gross Vehicle Weight.

I think on the 416 the max was 4950kG's

Is it a manual, automatic or sprintshift gearbox?

I think the GVW is 4600.

It's an automatic.

I would suggest that's a large part of the problem. The spare payload on an empty 416 is likely to be in the region of 1115 kgs. Unless it's got a full water tank, gas cylinders etc, I'd expect it to be a bit bouncy.

Having said that, our 640 rolled and bounced until we had air-rides fitted at a cost of about £300, and it improved it by about 80%. Further leaves on the spring would have the same effect but would probably be more expensive.

For a start, fill it up with all your gubbins, and see how it handles then. Mine's always better after Mrs Smick gets aboard, but that's because her handbag weighs two hundred weight!
