was just wondering what the satnav of choice was for motorhomers, and whether it is worth getting one which takes into account the size of your vehicle.

we have an old TomTom One which we got about 4 years ago, would it be possible to update this one to get the software for larger vehicles and also the camping POI databases.

I am sure the "expert" on sat navs (Saddletramp) will respond shortly, he is a big fan of the Snooper sat nav as am I, and I purchased mine after reading Saddletramps posts on this subject, excellent piece of kit IMHO.

Others will swear by Tom Tom and Garmin, so I would suggest you do your own research and then make your purchase.

Hi

We use a Snooper which as you say can be programmed with the length and Height of the vehicle.

When you first switch on it asks you Car or motorhome,
we have been very satisfied.

I've had Navman, Mio (now under one camp) and now have 2 Garmin both of which are very good. Garmin have been in the GPS world longer than most. My wife recently took the 765T to France and found it to be very accurate

I am a huge Tom Tom fan and have had several over the years. However, after a number of "events" where we have been taken down some very narrow unsuitable roads we decided to look into the Snooper unit.

I eventually bit the bullet and spent the cash. We have now used it for a few weeks. Initial thoughts were not very favourable. The first observation was with regard to the sound out put. The speaker is not very good. The voice sounds distorted at high level.

The unit is not as easy to navigate through the menus compared to the TT however, it is nothing to complex.

I must say that I am now getting used to it. The main thing is it gets you to your destination as easily as possible taking into consideration the size of your vehicle, and as far as I can see it does this well

In summary, the S7000 is not as good a quality unit as the TomTom but it does it's job of getting you to your destination without the worry of single track roads, or width restrictions.

On that basis I do not regret buying it. But it would benefit from better speakers.

I like Garmin stuff!

But, since there doesn't seem to be a roadmap of Spain that shows bridge heights maybe getting a truck type guidance system would be sensible as its the only option in that instance?

the snooper stuff looks cool, but it a bit out of our price range at the moment.

i think the most important thing is to have up to date maps and get the POIs on... and to remember to not trust the satnav too much when it comes to road choices!

I have gone down the route of upgrading my TomTom Go 720 to TomTom Truck @ £149.00 for the software. (You do need for your unit to have a SD card slot, which I believe the TomTom One does not have.)

I found this was the most cost effective way for me, as to purchase a new truck unit such as Garmin, Snooper etc was in excess of £300.

So far so good, but I have yet to test it over the water.
