Hi All,

So now we have the mechanics sorted out, time to look at niggly problems.

American oven. Once the door is open, you can see the cavity is split by a built in platform, 2/3 of the way from the top. This platform is solid enamelled metal, and has a gas burner underneath.

To grill, you put something underneath the flame. Easy.

To cook in the oven part, i have been putting trays - casserole dishes etc on top of the solid shelf. Everything burns to a charcoaled mess from the bottom of the cooking vessel upwards. Longer cooking = thicker mess. Even on a very low heat, this platform gets so hot it will burn food.

I am sure there is a simple solution to this, I just cannot work it out. No wire shelves because there aren't brackets to fit one onto.

Sharon,

"now we have the mechanics sorted out"
euphemism for batteries Wink

Get Keith to knock up a trivet. Tell him he is so resourceful and ingenious that it will be no more than a 5 minute job.

When that fails, buy this and you can increase the stand-off yourself by unbending the legs with pliars.

When you serve up a beautifully cooked dish, you can rub it in by saying that next time you'll "get a MAN in".

Thanks for that Dave. I am not convinced a trivet would work, but I will certainly give it a go.

Keith,

Don't look to me for DIY, mate, I hate it. Alison bolsters me by saying I always do a good job. Problem is, I'm useless at starting them; much rather be doing something else with my time. I'm always skulking away to the dog's house with my tail between my legs after hearing an exasperated sigh followed by a "I suppose I'll have to get a MAN in, then ......".

Oh, yes, please don't bite every time as then it will cease to be an enjoyable sport Wink

Hi Dave
I didn't bite mate, just returned service so to speak, no offence taken, I know when I am being bated......
You carry on mate, I love the banter back and forth, it brightens my day and gives me an excuse not to start any of those jobs Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Hi Pepe

Thanks Smile

No shelf - guess someone else has that.
And now you tell me I have a naff oven!! Good news because I like to think I am a competent cook, bad news because of more expense to replace it!!

Last time we went on holiday and left the boys at home they were under instructions not to withold bad news until we got back (this instruction as a reaction to the previous time ........!). No 2 son took it a little too literally and rang to say the oven stopped working. Alison was already planning shopping for a new one before we got home, only to find, to her bitter disappointment, that all that was wrong was someone had fiddled with the timer.

You have restored my faith in women that at least some need more than the slightest excuse to shop for new stuff.
