Gerry, you seem to be a man in the know.
I bought one of the 'essentials' range earlier this year, its got all the bells and whistles but a rubbish viewing angle. Do these cheap end tv's use laptop screens.
It's difficult to find a 16" or thereabouts with widescreen format with a decent viewing angle.

Can you recommend a TV/DVD combo with widescreen AND an decent viewing angle which will run of a 12volt input

Oh!, and before I forget, here in the RoI we are having our analogue switch off next year and we have adopted the newer MPEG4 technology and UK MPEG2 'freeview' kit will not work here which rules out Avtex products as an option.

If the problem is confined to the failure of the speakers, you might be able to get a cheap solution by buying an FM transmitter (about 16 quid at Maplin) which could send the audio output from the television set to your van's radio. My brother-in-law has one made by Belkin, I think, and it works well. The final sound quality is likely to be rather better than that from the flat-screen television itself.

If you decide to try this option, it would be best to check that there is some audio output via line (phono sockets) or headphone (mini jack) to start with. Otherwise, the problem is more than just the speakers - and you have the perfect excuse for buying a new television set!

I was looking at Kogan too, there were some bargains on ebay.

But they have received some bad press regarding very long delivery times and poor after-sales service.

We have a 24" Kogan. It's one of the LED models and uses 40watts. It doesn't have a DVD but does have a USB socket and it can record to a usb stick or hard drive. It will also play avi video off our USB hard drive. I can record stuff at home and transfer it to the hard drive and watch when we are away Smile

The one problem is the tv guide. It only shows a now list of whats on with the list of about 8 channels on a page. To see what is on later you have to select a channel then you can scroll through that channels programs for today and the next few days.
So there is no 'grid' type guide.

Viewing angle is good and its light weight and only 40 watts.

Just checked and you can now get the 24" WITH DVD for less than we paid in March.

We did buy the 12v cable in case we had any voltage issues. Which we haven't.

Hi

It doesn't totally meet your specifications as it runs off 240v, but I recommend the Sony KDL-22EX320 22" which we bought recently.

<Details Here>

It really does have a great picture and sound, the sound is very impressive for a tv of this size with 2 X 8w speakers. It's LED back/edgelit and is economical. It will record to USB hard drives, I use laptop drives in small nice caddies, and also play movies etc from external drives, including many variants of divx/xvid.

It has a shed load of features, a couple of novel ones are built in opera web browser, supports full screen skype, RJ45 network port and built in wireless adapter. also specific support for services such as BBC I player, 5 on demand, love film etc etc, great when you're parked in decent range of wifi internet access.

if you look around it's available for about £230

If you are near Morecambe in the not too distant future; I have an analogue thompson 15 lcd 12volt tv with cables for 12v and 120v, doesn't record or anything and needs a little digibox from asda or something. you can have it for £20 if it's any use Wink

Cheers

I thought I was being very clever when I found a 12/240v Bauer 19" TV that could record to USB £125. I had a Bauer cine camera in the 70's cost £300+ best out there, so this TV must be good.............WRONG. The sound syc goes way out if you change channel, only way to get it back is to turn tv off/on again. Took it back. The second one is the same. I put it down to poor signal, since proved not to be. Shop now closed down, no way to find out who makes the set let alone customer support. Lesson learnt.
