The idea of a removable steering wheel has appealed to me for some time as it would make turning the driver seat round a lot easier and it would be a good thief deterrent.

Apart from the cost the only other thing that has put me off is that, I'm sure I read somewhere on here, you could lock them on but you couldn't lock them off. The implication being that if you left the wheel somewhere in the van van and a thief found it he could just snap it on.

I managed to buy one on eBay the other week (£105) and have just fitted it and am pleasantly surprise by a few features I didn't expect and they are as follows:-

a. The wheel is a bit smaller and higher than the original and this makes getting in and out of the drivers seat a lot easier.

b. It feels a lot better than the standard Fiat one.

c. It can be locked when it is off the column so leaving it in the van, but detached, is just as secure as taking the thing with you and no need to hide it.

I would imagine that anyone intend on stealing a van will do so with the keys most likely removed direct from the owner by whatever means they deem appropriate! Shocked That or scoop it up with a Spec lift or similar.

As an anti-thief device I'd say it's less relevant in a motorhome then say a classic car, but good that you've found a couple of hidden benefits from the install. Smile

a detachable steering wheel, used in conjunction with a 'swivel base', gives you surprisingly more room!

If you are daft enough to keep your steering wheel key with your other keys then I might agree with you Addie.

Nice small key and easy to hide.

My van has one and so far haven't felt the need to use it in earnest.
Up to now we have always towed a car that could accommodate the wheel. But not sure where it would go if no car on tow, maybe under the bonnet.

Ray.

You don't need to do that as you can take the wheel off, lock it, then it can't be put back on the column. You just take the key with you.

I suppose they could steal the wheel.
