So am I correct in thinking that you could only use a removable steering wheel with an older Fiat based motorhome? Recent Fiat based motorhomes all appear to have airbags fitted inside the actual steering wheel itself! Good idea though and I wish we could remove ours.

Sue

Hi Sue,

You can buy them for later Fiat steering columns but I guess you have to lose the airbag.

If we are not using the motorvan for a while I bring the wheel home. The van is in a compound some distance away.

Sounds like I will be saving up for one of these, I find it a pain reaching over the seat and what happens....you always hit the horn and its always at night.............so does the existing horn still work when the wheel is in situ?

If you have a steering wheel that does have an airbag in it, be wary of removing it if it causes the airbag warning light to stay on.

From January next year, the MOT's rules are changing, and an airbag warning light will lead to a fail.

Suppose you could just take the bulb out though......

My steering wheel looks the same as yours. How does the lock mechanism work on yours please. It is almost as if a part of mine is missing.

I have attached a file showing the wheel in situ. It is the only one I have without visiting the MH where it is stored.

Hi,

Yes the horn still works you just connect two simple cables up in the boss and line up the self cancelling mechanism with the new boss.
Ten minute job to remove the old one and fit the new.

Only tricky bit, if you haven't fitted a steering wheel before, is getting it on the right spline position so the wheel ends up correct when steering staight ahead. Not a problem as it comes back off the splines easily to allow you to correct.

Dave,

That's the same wheel isn't it.

Do my pictures not show how the lock works?

The brass thing you see lying next to the key is a barrel which goes in the keyhole and sticks out the other side to do the "locking".
When the key is turned it locks in that position and the key can be extracted.

Is the key and brass barrel missing on yours?

Looking at your photos again the barrel on mine looks just the same as yours but when you turn the key no shaft locks into the boss. Perhaps part of the mechanism is missing.

Any idea who the manufacturer is for the wheel as I can see no markings and do not have any paperwork for it.

cheers

Dave

Dave,

If you look at this advert you'll see that, although it's the same wheel as ours, it has a different lock to mine ??

Does tell you who makes them though.

Always wanted one for reasons of greater/better movement of swivel seat.
My model doesn't have airbag but does have cruise control buttons on the steering wheel so I suppose that rules a removable one out for me Sad
