Hi all

We're about to pick up our first motorhome Very Happy

Can anyone offer any advice on storage? We live in central London so will have to locate somewhere for storage - thanks to other members I've got as far as understanding we should look for a CaSSOA site or similar if storing in the UK.

But my family live in the south of france on a very large plot of land and we're tempted to store the vehicle there all year round and just fly in when we want to use it - given that we'll be spending all our time in it on the continent.

My questions - does anyone else do this, how do they find it? And how would/do insurance companies respond to this?

Sophie

If they hear about it they don't like it as most insurance policies only cover continental "use" not continental storage and specify you must not be away from the vehicle except for quite short periods of time.

From what I've read on here, if it is going to be used there all the time you would be better off registering it there. You are going to need to return to the UK with it ever year once it's 3 years old to get it MOT'd.

Edit missed out an essential not.

If you keep a UK registered vehcile in France for over 6 months (some say 12 months)they want it re-registered to France. There are some advantages of this; the MoT equivlanet is every 2 years not annually, you can get insurance with a French company and you would not have to return it to the UK every year for an MoT test.

MoT's can onlky be done in the nUK and wheile there may be debate about whether you need one - depepnding on your insurance stipulations as reagrds "roadworthy" which could be certified by an inspection in France (perhaps), or "current MoT" which means it must return to the UK for testing.

Insuring a UK registered vehicle in France can be expesive (there are other threads explaining this) so the choice is depepndent on many factors.

Would ot be better to buy a French registered vehicle and avoid the problems of re-registering?

Just some thoughts,

Dave

Sounds a good idea. You'd need to register it to a French address, but it sounds like that shouldn't be a problem.

Kittycamper on here stores their van at various places in France (depending on where they get to before they have to come home). Try a PM to her.

Gerald

If the vehicle is out the UK for more than 12 months, it's deemed to have been removed permanently and must be exported. It's an offence not to do so, just so you know.

ANPR cameras are now fully operational on every UK port of departure, so successful fiddling is very much more unlikely, again just so you know. Smile

Also, it's an offence to declare SORN whilst the vehicle is not physically on UK soil. (Yep, just so you know...)

Dougie.

Thanks all.

It seems we should think about re-registering to France if we want to store it over there.

I'll keep my eyes out on the forums for anyone who's done that.

apart from the registering paperwork trail needed. your family in France would need to have it in their names as u need to provide utility bills.

Is it too late to drop the UK deal and buy in France instead?

As from what you have said it would make far more sense in the circumstances.

bri, apparently it's ok now but resale value will be very poor, if your going to go through reregistering hassle at least buy a lhd that'll sell for decent money when you sell it
