Just getting ready to go to France for two weeks!I thought I had one part used 7kg Calor bottle and I unused but have just discovered both are "used"How can I tell what is left in each. They both appear to be about half full! There weight is approx 11 kg.What is the weight of a full one.I seem to remember that there was a formula for working out how much gas is left.I would in the past have just got a full one to take but they are so expensive now!!
There is usually a collar around the neck of the bottle which carries the weight of the bottle.
I put a study box on the bathroom scales and zero the reading with the little knurled wheel on ours.
Next I weigh the bottle I'm testing and using the weight on the collar I can work out the weight of gas in the bottle.
That is a fraction of the total weight of gas supplied. ie a quarter or half or whatever.
Not totally accurate but a good enough pointer for me.

After many years of weighing bottles I agree with the advise given to codfinger [Chris] in the referenced post. As a general rule an empty bottle weighs approx the same as the amount of gas that it is going to hold. Most empty 6kg propane bottles I've weighed are 6-7kg and 13kg ones 13 - 15kg.
I believe that your bottles are as you say about half full with 3 - 4kg of gas inside them. Have you considered going to a larger size bottle. In France I use a Totalgas 13kg propane which cost about €29 when I exchanged earlier this month. It is possible to buy a French cylinder for only €1 deposit on the bottle.
You have to do a bit of converting - the gas is weighed in KG's but the empty weight shown on the aluminium collar is shown in LB's and OZ's. Not that simples.
Thanks for all the replies. So a 7kg bottle should weigh about 14kg full!Mine weight approx 11kg so about half full.So it looks as if I should get a full one before I go
i have the same problem as you, half full bottle but i need full one for my trip to france, so rather than waste 1/2 a bottle i'm going to the local dump to see if they have an empty one.
so i can get that filled and save my 1/2 full bottle.
