being new to this wonderful escapist way of getting away from it all (except the kids will coming us) I'm looking at options for insurance.
Being 48 yo and never having had an accident or motoring offence in all my years of driving I thought it would be easy to decide who to go with.
We will be using the motorhome (sale still going through) to travel to see family in Germany at various times of year (first trip usually march/april and last trip usually oct/nov). Initially it will be stored on our drive whilst we decide if we want to put it in storage (probably will due to the road being narrow and having 2 other cars). It has a cobra alarm system and no reversing camera/parking sensors.
Best quote so far is £300 (£408 from my car insurance company) Would we get a better deal if we dedefinitelyut it into storage for part of the year and fit a reversing camera?
I would recommend that whoever you go for, make sure the policy is designed for motorhomes not just normal vehicle cover, as there's a lot of difference in the required cover.
We have been with Safeguard for a number of years, have you had a quote from them yet? Make sure you let them know anything that might be pertinent to gain discount, e.g. alarm details, membership of CC/CCC, etc. Also ours is insured with Mrs B as the policyholder since I have the car policy and they won't let you have two concurrent NCDs. Mrs B actually does most of the driving anyway. They also include specialist motorhome breakdown cover for UK and Europe at no extra cost. I believe from another current thread that they will give some further discount for a reversing camera, but we don't have one fitted (yet!).
They are always very helpful on the phone, although we haven't had a fault claim they have recorded non-fault claims with no change of premium. Have used their breakdown service (via the AA) in the UK including recovery on a low-loader with no problems.
Our renewal premium over the last few years has hardly changed, apart from when we updated to a newer (higher value) vehicle, some years it actually went down by a few pounds.
They may not be the cheapest quote available but we are happy so far.

I´m not really as paranoid as everyone thinks I am
thanks for the response Roger. Not had a quote from Safeguard but will have a look later when I've got the kids to bed
I already have two car policies with full NCD on two cars but it might be worth letting my wife start building up her own NCD if I'm going to be restricted
will look at joining CC and see whow much discount that will give. I'm already a Civil Service Motoring Association member so that might help
Try sureterm - the people that recently purchased our last motorhome hadn't owned or had insurance on one before and got a quote fully comp of sub £300..
son's mate bought a camper couldn't get covered already using his ncd but was at renewal time, & got admiral multicover quite cheaply only a transit based veh and his car
Another recommendation to take a quote from Caravanguard
We've been with them for several years, starting way back with our caravans and find them to be very competetive.
We were dreading a massive price hike in line with a lot of Insurers and were pleasantly surprised to find that our quote for renewal next month has only increased by £3.00.
They include something like 8 months European cover and we've opted for their European breakdown cover too (around £40)
I suppose that any Insurer is only as good as the service they provide when you need it most and to date, we've not had to try either insurance or breakdown, so can't advise on side of their service.
As a slight aside, if your wife has been on either of your car policies as a named driver, some companies will accredit her with the same 'no claims' discount as yourself.
thanks for the info blizzard. My wife has been a named driver on my policy for the last 7 years so we might try that as an option but it won't be through our current insurance company (LV) they wanted £408 against other quotes from specialist MH insurers which come in around £300
Comfort offered us a competitive price last year on our first motorhome, including UK and continental breakdown cover with no size restrictions. They also allow 365 days overseas use although we only use it for holidays etc, and we limited mileage to 6000 pa.
It is underwritten by Aviva and the RAC for breakdown.
I am under the impression that quotes given are not really subject to previous "no claims", as our car is insured with my wife as the policyholder and me as a named driver and so I had no claims history to speak of. I had an accident in my works van which is on a company policy and declared it at the time- the lady at Comfort seemed to imply that motorhome policies are subject to different procedures than standard car policies, and it would appear that on renewal there is no "no-claims" to carry over, and probably the reason that most policy renewals do not have huge price hikes like a standard car policy etc
