XP Start, Settings, Control Panel, Sounds & Audio Devices, Audio Tab. Make sure that default device for sound playback is set to the device hooked to your speakers.

and wont let me click on them

It sounds to me (no pun intended!) that the sound card might be disabled in the BIOS. I therefore suggest that you check the BIOS settings. To do that varies by PC but you should see a brief display on the screen at startup that tells you what key to hit to enter Setup. It is often the DEL key or F2 but can be others. You then need to repeatedly press the key until you enter the BIOS setup. After accessing the BIOS, go through the various screens until you see reference to sound / audio and make sure that it is enabled. If you need to make a change then make sure that you click on Save Settings & Exit.
You should see "Taskbar & Start Menu Properties" when you click on "Properties" --->click on "Notification Area" & make sure the "Volume" box is ticked. If it's 'greyed' out, try a shut down including disconnecting the power & your connection to the internet. I've had this problem in the past & it just corrected itself!!
