I have a laptop running win7 and android tablet running 2.2.
Can I connect them together with a ethernet cable without a switch box using a switching cable.
I have a box and the cable but the tablet can not see the laptop connection.
I have tried reading to help box on the laptop but does not make a lot of sense to me.
The reason I want to do this as the tablet can not see my ad hoc wifi and I don't want to run 2 accounts on 3 network.
I know I could use a router but all the ones I have looked at do not list my ZTE dongle as compatible.

If all you want to do is to enable your tablet to share your laptop's wifi connection then I suggest you download one of the free wifi hot spot applications that take advantage of the functionality in Windows 7 to create your own wifi hotspot on your laptop.
I have been using the free version of Connectify here and it seems to do the job pretty well.
I do not know them all, but currently have most of the branded Tablet devices on my desk. None of them have any kind of ethernet connection. They all rely on a WiFi network.

I have downloaded connectify the free version. The tablet can see it and tries to connect but is looking for an IP address which it never finds.

Mine has a connection box with 2 USB and an ethernet port.
The tablet does not have a brand name on it "El cheapo" brand.

I don't have connectify so am speaking from first principles, but check that connectify is configured to allocate IP addresses. The setting is likely to reference DHCP.
I have been reading more on the connectify site and found that you cannot use the 3g/4g network on the free version. It can see it ok but ou can not change the settings in the advance box. So will have to get the fulll version.
peribro do you use the full version or the free version and if you have the full version have you an android phone/tablet on it.

Connectify has only made these changes in the last week or so - they are trying to push people to the paid version. I haven't used it since the changes but I will switch over to Virtual Router which does the same thing but is free. I have used it before without any problems. You can download it from Cnet here.
Andy - have you thought of using a '3' MiFi? As far as I know, you can just use your SIM card from the dongle in the MiFi router.
Gerald
I am just being tight the ones I have seen are all over Ģ60 and I will not be using the tablet enough to warrant that.
