Thanks Peribro for suggesting "Connectivity" I have a wifi booster but could not get my wifes note book to use my internet connection. I tried Virtual router and spent over an hour messing around to try to get it to work but failed (a xp problem) However I downloaded "Connectivity" and within minutes all working. Thanks again. Phil
Well I am glad this thread has helped somebody. I did take the plunge and go for the full version I have tried it this morning and it is not working cannot even get the the program to start.
I ran the diagnostics and that says it is running.
Back to the drawing board.
Andy

Am I correct in thinking you have a wireless internet connection on the laptop and you want the tablet to access the internet via the laptops connection?
If so; potentially there are a couple of options, your best bet;
You say the tablet device has a wired ethernet port provided through a connection box, it would be best to get an ethernet cross over cable from a local PC shop, many modern systems don't need one as they will sense that a direct connection is being made, but a cross over cable will always work, use the cross over cable to connect directly between the laptop and tablet, this is essential.
On the laptop go to the properties of the wireless connection, search through and there should be an option to 'allow other computers to use the internet connection'. this will enable ICS on the laptop, it will set the laptop up as a simple router/gateway, it will possibly change the local machines IP address and enable the DHCP service, amongst other things.
now if you turn on the tablet device, it should use DHCP to get a valid IP address from the laptop, using the cabled network, it will also be given the IP address of the laptop as its gateway, hopefully you will now be able to access the internet on the tablet.
depending on the IP addresses originally being used on both devices; you may be able to accomplish a similar thing by connecting the devices together using the cross over cable, described above, then on the laptop; selecting both the wired and wireless connections, right clicking on one of them, and selecting 'bridge connections', or similar, from the context menu. however this depends on other things so I would use ICS (internet connection sharing) first.
Not meant disrespectfully to anyone but I wouldn't buy software to create an access point on the laptop, windows 7 and server 2008 have the functionality to create a software access point built in.
I can't be more precise as I don't use windows 7 at home and I don't have an android device.
