Hi
Having a laptop with a wifi signal enhancer is sometimes not good enough and I am wondering whether it is really worth buying a 3G Kindle for when no hot spot is available.
How long are Amazon going to let us use free 3G for private access?
What are your experiences and would you recommend me buying one?
Kind regards
Alshymer
I find the 3G invaluable, especially when abroad. It's impossible to know whether Amazon will ever start to charge for the access. I think they'd find it hard for two reasons. First, they have sold it to vast numbers of people with the implicit promise that access will be free as all these customers have paid for the free access by forking out considerably more for their Kindle. Secondly, although very useful, the access is clunky and you have to be pretty patient. It's not something that a lot of people would be prepared to pay up continuously for when there are so many other options.
But the Kindle is great for reading, instant book accessability and I love the low weight and ease to hold, finds your page, no more bookmarks (or folded corners )
Really good reports for the recon ones (e.g. "new" but without 240v charger) .
For reading - superb. But Internet isn't "perfect" - but it is perfect for emergencies. It will be invaluable when we head off to Asia backpacking too!!

Do you have a smart phone such as the iPhone or android? If so and your with Vodafone you can sign up for data traveller which for £10 a month provdes 25mb a day in the eu.
Doesn't sound much but I've used it every day for hours sometimes and not gone over.
Had a good signal every day as well and it's quick enough. I have actually started to use the laptop and antenna less as the phone is easier.
I thought the iPhone was so over rated until I finally found a good use for it out here.
Quite starting to fancy a kindle though as our rather bulky Reading selection is dwindling.

Hi,
Both of us have Kindles and love the availability of books and wifi access whilst we're away. Granted, the wifi is slow but you get used to it and can access banking, e-mail etc as and when necessary. It beats trying to find a McDonalds (yuk).

Hi
Thanks for your responses.
At present I use a Hawking HWU9DD with my MacBook, both of which are fantastic.
I don't have a smartphone, because as we live in France we don't have so much need for a mobile phone as much as we did in UK.
We would however very much like an iPhone 5 when it comes out for the camera, iPod and 3G facilities but as we would hardly use the phone the costs are prohibitive.
I know that Vodaphone Data Traveller must be really useful, but you need a contract costing around £46 per month in UK. The costs are worse in France and Pay as you Go is time limited here too.
This is why I am thinking about Kindle.
Kind regards
Alshymer
I would definitely go for the 3g Kindle. I have used mine extensively throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand with no speed or connectivity issues.
Would agree with pretty much everything that has been said so far.
The internet connection is extremely clunky and slow, but it generally works and is free.... at the moment.
In February we used my wife's 3G Kindle successfully in the Caribbean for accessing our email and surfing (slowly).
However, I'm not sure if we would have invested in one purely for the free net access. My wife LOVES her Kindle because she reads loads and it certainly does the business on that score.
I also think one should be cautious about whether free general net access will continue indefinitely. The commercial reason the expensive Kindle has 3G is to enable the owner to purchase and download books without the need for a wi-fi connection ie to be able to buy books anywhere they fancy - not to provide generally free surfing.
You kindle surfers probably all know this but if you use the mobile version of mhf it's really fast even on a poor connection.
Can't post the URL but when you get notification of a reply to a post one the links is to the low bandwidth mobile version which is text only but quick.
I think Vodafone traveller might be available on payg for £2 a day but I'm sure the contracts start on sim only for £10 a month. Think I'm paying £20.
